Vandoorne brengt veel tijd door in de simulator

Stoffel Vandoorne bereidt zich voor op zijn eerste volledige seizoen in de Formule 1. De Belg spendeert daarbij veel tijd in de simulator van McLaren, zo onthulde hij in gesprek met F1Journaal.be. De GP2-kampioen van 2014 krijgt komend seizoen de kans op het hoogste niveau. Samen met Fernando Alonso moet hij McLaren terug naar de top helpen.

Op de vraag van F1Journaal.be of hij al in de simulator getest heeft met de nieuwe auto, antwoordde Vandoorne: "Al heel veel ja. Voorlopig is alles positief en het ziet er een goede stap vooruit uit. Wat er moeilijk is voor ons is om te weten hoe groot de stap is die de andere teams gemaakt hebben. De reglementen zijn voor iedereen nieuw."

"Toen ik enkele dagen geleden met het team belde zei men mij dat ze tijdens de twee weken rond de Kerst in de windtunnel een redelijke stap vooruit hadden gevonden. Ik denk dat het voor alle teams momenteel hetzelfde is. Zodra we in Barcelona in het echt zullen rijden, zal de snelheid van ontwikkeling omhoog gaan. We beschikken dan over nog veel meer data en kunnen dan ook de correlatie tussen de windtunnel, CFD en het circuit beter beoordelen."

"Men is nog steeds bezig met de ontwikkeling van de auto. Iedere week worden er verbeteringen gevonden en nieuwe onderdelen geproduceerd. Het is zoals altijd weer een last-minute zaak om test alles klaar te krijgen voor de eerste test. Zoiets is logisch en geldt voor alle teams."

De nieuwe McLaren MP4-32 heeft nog geen gestalte gekregen. Vandoorne: "Nee, er is alleen nog maar het chassis. Alles eromheen is misschien al in productie, maar alles aan het bodywork zijn de dingen die zo lang mogelijk worden uitgesteld omdat de ideeën nog in de windtunnel en CFD (Computional Fluid Dynamics) zitten. Alles wordt nog ontworpen voor de eerste test."

  Dat denk ik dus ook. Hij heeft die bewegingen die Max maakt niet nodig. Net als Ricciardo (die is ook goed btw) is het een slimme racer...echt, ik ben helemaal gek van Stoffel. En dat bij HET team, wel ff wat anders dan bij een frisdrank firma.

  Laat Stoffelke eerst maar eens afrekenen met Alonso jongens, dat zal al een hele kluif voor hem gaan worden.
  Ik geloof zeker dat Stoffel een goede kans maakt om een topper te worden, en in de toekomst meestrijd voor overwinningen. Geef hem de tijd zou ik zeggen.

Ik hoop voor hem, en het zou me zeer verbazen, dat de software waarmee het echte testen gebeurt niet rFactor is zoals onlangs mee gedemonstreerd werd bij een rondleiding in het hoofdkwartier van McLaren. Ook al is het rFactor Pro.
