Whitmarsh: "Tijd voor frisse ideeën in Formule 1"

De overname van de Formule 1 door Liberty Media komt voor de sport als geroepen. Dat concludeert voormalig McLaren-teambaas Martin Whitmarsh in gesprek met Sky Sports F1. "Het is een nieuw tijdperk voor de Formule 1, maar dat zat er ook wel aan te komen."

Whitmarsh vervolgt: "Voor elke ondernemende sport breekt ooit het moment aan dat het tijd is voor frisse ideeën en nieuwe meningen. De Formule 1 heeft dat punt nu bereikt. Ik ben een Formule 1-fan, nog steeds. Ik hou van deze sport, ik heb vijfentwintig jaar in die wereld rondgelopen, maar het is nu ook leuk om het van een afstandje te volgen. Ik ben van plan dat te blijven doen. De sport zal een nieuwe groei doormaken, live sport content is zo waardevol."

"Bernie Ecclestone verdient alle waardering voor wat hij gedaan heeft, hij was in het begin echt een drijvende kracht voor de Formule 1. Hij is een charmante boef. Ik was regelmatig een van zijn grootste vijanden, maar je gaat ook van hem houden. Bernie hoort veel krediet te krijgen voor het feit dat hij de Formule 1 gemaakt heeft tot wat het is."

Moest die ooit een versnellingsbak ontwikkelen, dan zou je hem enkel in neutraal kunnen zetten.
