Liberty niet opnieuw in onderhandeling over Britse GP

De laatste weken was er veel te doen om de toekomst van de Britse Grand Prix. Verschillende media meldden dat Silverstone de fee voor het organiseren van de Formule 1-race niet meer zouden kunnen ophoesten na 2019, waarna Derek Warwick, directeur van de British Racing Drivers' Club meldde dat er pas in juli 2017 een besluit zou worden genomen over de toekomst van de Grand Prix.

Chase Carey, de nieuwe CEO van de Formule 1, meldt echter dat Liberty Media niet van zins is om het huidige contract met de BRDC aan te passen, zo vertelde hij aan Mail on Sunday: "We zullen niet opnieuw in onderhandeling gaan met Silverstone, maar we gaan er wel aan werken om goede partners te zijn. Wij zien wel in dat de Britse Grand Prix van groot belang is voor Formule 1 en hoewel wij ook graag naar nieuwe locaties willen gaan zoals Londen, New York en Miami, willen we niet te veel tornen aan het fundament van de Formule 1, die toch vooral een Europese traditie is."

"We willen Silverstone helpen de race te promoten, we zien bijvoorbeeld dat als de NFL een wedstrijd organiseert in Londen de winkeliers daar ook baat bij hebben. Zoiets willen we ook bij de races bewerkstelligen. Het moet een weekendlange show worden met de race als belangrijkste evenement." Het is echter niet zo dat de Britse GP slecht bezocht werd de laatste jaren, op de zondagen verwelkomt het circuit bijna 140.000 bezoekers. De omzet die daarmee gegenereerd wordt is in de toekomst mogelijk niet hoog genoeg om de kosten te dekken.

Precies, als je met die bezoekersaantallen geen winst maakt klopt er geen hol meer van, en zal iedere verstandige organisator er ver vanaf blijven.

Mooi zo. Hopelijk gaan we 21 keer de GP van Baku beleven in 2018. Met wat geluk hebben ze tegen die tijd nog wat bochten weten te saneren.

Als de organisatie niet meer geld kan genereren dan trekken ze echt wel de stekker eruit.
Verlies in 15 &16 was 5 miljoen pond...-10 dus. Dan moet je met hele vette evenementen komen om dat te compenseren. De entree prijzen hier zijn al erg hoog dus ze kunnen de kaartjes niet nog eens gemiddeld 40 euro duurder maken.

  Het blijft wel vreemd dat de Engelse overheid de race niet ondersteunt, gezien autosport flink wat werkgelegenheid biedt in Engeland en het nog altijd een auto industie heeft. Een GP ondersteunen is dus best wel uit te leggen.

  Nee Senna, de Britse overheid ondersteunt geen enkel sportevenement, geen voetbal, geen Wimbledon, geen Rugby en geen F1.
  Laat de regering maar eens uitleggen waarom ze een paar miljoen Pond voor 1 race per jaar zouden uitgeven.
  F1 is goed, maar niet alles.

  en daar gaat het mis...oneerlijke verziekende concurrentie, net als met dat Chinese voetbal wat nu aan de gang is.

Blijf het tamelijk verbijsterend vinden, alleen al op de zondag bijna 140.000 bezoekers.. Durf dus rustig te zeggen meer dan 200.000 in het hele weekend.... En dan nog is het niet winstgevend?? (te maken)
