Lopez: "De winnaarsmentaliteit is terug bij Renault"

Gerard Lopez zou niet raar staan te kijken als zijn team Renault volgend jaar weer meestrijdt voor de wereldtitels. Met Genii Capital nam hij eind vorig jaar een meerderheidsbelang in de renstal van de Franse autofabrikant en sindsdien was een stijgende lijn in de prestaties waarneembaar.

Op Monza eindigde de dit jaar sterk rijdende Robert Kubica slechts als achtste. Dat ervaart Renault als een teleurstelling en dat is een goed teken volgens Lopez. Hij deelde aan Reuters mede: De winnaarsmentaliteit is terug bij Renault. We zouden volgend jaar graag weer vechten voor het kampioenschap, maar daar is meer dan woorden voor nodig. Het team moet dat ook als cultuur hebben en dat komt langzaam maar zeker terug. Zo'n achtste plek valt nu niet alleen voor mij tegen, maar voor iedereen van het team.

Door enkele posities in de teamleiding te wijzigen hebben we de wil om te winnen weer opgewekt. We hebben ze laten zien dat ze het nog kunnen, zoals een paar jaar geleden. De fundering is solide. We zijn bijna klaar met de herstructurering. Wat ons betreft kunnen we ons voor het eerst volledig focussen op het behalen van resultaten in plaats van op bouwen.
