Pirelli neemt meer dan 3500 banden mee naar Barcelona

Om de nieuwe bredere banden voldoende te kunnen testen neemt Pirelli maar liefst 3500 banden mee naar Barcelona. De 10 Formule 1-teams die deelnemen aan de tests op het Circuit de Catalunya krijgen de beschikking over meer dan 80 sets banden tijdens de eerste acht testdagen in 2017. Ferrari, Mercedes en Red Bull hebben de banden in eerdere tests al eens aan de tand kunnen voelen, maar toen werden de banden gemonteerd op een 2015-chassis.

De teams hebben in totaal 810 sets aangevraagd, waarvan meer dan 100 wets en intermediates. Dit jaar zal er namelijk gegarandeerd een dag op een natte baan getest worden, omdat de regenbanden tot nu toe slechts tijdens een beperkt aantal testkilometers gebruikt zijn. Voorlopig staat deze regentest voor donderdag 2 maart gepland, maar mocht het tijdens een van de eerdere dagen regenen in Barcelona, zal deze dag worden gebruikt om de regencompounds te testen.

Er zullen ook banden met de structuur die in 2016 gebruikelijk was worden meegenomen. Dit voor het geval dat de daadwerkelijke druk op de banden minder is dan wordt voorspeld door de toegenomen downforce. Aangenomen wordt dat de auto's met een substantieel hogere snelheid door de bochten moeten kunnen rijden, de vraag blijft echter hoeveel dit daadwerkelijk zijn weerslag zal hebben op de bandendegradatie.

  Want? In een gewoon weekend krijgt een coureur 13 setjes. 13sets a 4 banden maal 20 coureurs = 1040 bandjes voor een gewoon f1 weekend. Die banden worden versleten binnen 7 uur (Vrije trainingen a 4 uur, kwalificatie 1 uur, race 2 uur). Nu gaat het om een test waar ze 4 volle dagen rijden en ze 2x een raceafstand afleggen per dag waarin ze ook gewoon hun kwalificatie simulaties doen.
