Renault moet op last van FIA ontwerp achtervleugel aanpassen

Renault moet op last van de FIA voor de eerste Formule 1-race in Melbourne een aanpassing doorvoeren aan de achtervleugel. De wijze waarop deze ondersteund wordt is mogelijk in strijd met de regels.

Direct na de presentatie van Renaults RS17 plaatste de concurrentie al vraagtekens bij het ontwerp van de support pillar. Deze is bevestigd aan de DRS-pod op de vleugel in plaats van aan de carrosserie. Teams zoals Red Bull en Ferrari hebben ook aanpassingen gemaakt om de aerodynamica te verbeteren, maar kwamen met een soort zwanenhals ontwerp.

Het draait allemaal om artikel 3.9.6 van de technische reglementen dat voorschrijft dat (en nu wordt het een brei aan regels) de steun moet worden verlengd totdat het voldoet aan de regelgeving die betrekking heeft op de vleugel volgens artikel 3.9.1.

Renault dacht dat het was toegestaan omdat er aanvullende regelgeving kwam dat deze support pillar mocht worden aangebracht op 'kleine onderdelen' die uitsluitend verbonden zijn met de aanpassing van de DRS. Andere teams dachten daar duidelijk anders over en kregen dus steun van de FIA die stelde dat de DRS en de deze ondersteuning geen 'kleine onderdelen' zijn. De bolides van Renault zouden een behoorlijke voordeel hebben dankzij deze vondst. De DRS zou bijvoorbeeld veel effectiever zijn.

Overigens maakten niet alle teams zich druk om de aanpassing van Renault. Zij oordeelden dat het niet een enorm voordeel zou opleveren.

regelgeving en duidelijk, zoals in elke sport is en blijft een groot deel van de regels een grijs gebied en hangt veel van de interpretatie af
