'Charlie Whiting nog niet met pensioen'

Charlie Whiting gaat nog niet pensioen. Dat is de reactie op geruchten dat de 64-jarige wedstrijd directeur Bernie Ecclestone, Pasquale Lattuneddu en Herbie Blash zou volgen op weg naar de uitgang van de Formule 1.

Een paar dagen geleden werd bekend dat Marcin Budkowski aangesteld was als technisch directeur van de FIA, een taak die Whiting eerder had. Maar hij blijft wel aan als starter en wedstrijd directeur.

Daarop kwamen de geruchten op gang dat Whiting wel eens snel met pensioen zou kunnen gaan, maar in Speed Week werd dat ontkracht: "Het is een gerucht en niet meer dan dat. Charlie Whiting is nog steeds hier."

Sinds Liberty Media de Formule 1 heeft overgenomen zijn er op diverse posities inmiddels verschuivingen geweest. In dat licht bezien zijn de geruchten ook niet vreemd. De veel jongere assistent van Whiting, Laurent Mekies, kan zo maar naar voren geschoven worden.
