Jean Todt: "Formule 2 biedt grote kans aan jonge rijders"

Gisteren werd bekend gemaakt dat de GP2 Series per direct worden omgedoopt tot Formule 2. Dat is de uitkomst van een overleg tussen de World Motor Sport Council en de FIA. De Fia had daarover al een akkoord over bereikt met de Formula One Group.

CEO van de Formula One Group, Chase Carey, is erg blij met de ontwikkelingen: "De Junior categorieën en de Formule 2 zijn belangrijke strategische activiteiten van de Formula One Group. Wij zijn verheugd om dit te versterken dankzij de overeenkomst met de FIA."

Ook FIA-president Jean Todt is een gelukkig man: "Om de Formule 2 ook daadwerkelijk nu van de grond te krijgen is een belangrijke stap. Het zal een grote kans bieden aan jonge rijders die als ultieme goal de Formule 1 hebben.

Bruno Michel van de Formule 2 stipt aan hoe belangrijk de GP2 is geweest voor de koningsklasse van de autosport: "In 12 geweldige GP2 seizoenen hebben wij 28 rijders naar een Formule 1 stoeltje gebracht, waaronder twee wereldkampioen."

GP2 voorheen F3000 en daarvoor formule 2. werd altijd al gezien als een opstart klasse richting F1 voor rijders.

Wat ik eigenlijk hoop is dat de nieuwe formule 2 weer net als vroeger een opstap klasse word voor de teams. Dat succesvolle F2 teams de stap durven te zetten naar de F1. Net zoals da... [Lees verder]

Goeie opzet. met de naam Formule 2 kan het ook meer als de opstart klasse van de F1 gezien worden, zo krijgt het duidelijker die status.

  Wat ik eigenlijk hoop is dat de nieuwe formule 2 weer net als vroeger een opstap klasse word voor de teams. Dat succesvolle F2 teams de stap durven te zetten naar de F1. Net zoals dat vroeger weleens gebeurde. Of dat F1 teams actiever worden in de F2. Ook iets dat vroeger gedaan werd.

  Er verandert gewoon bijna niks, eigenlijk alleen de naam. Zo lees ik het in ieder geval. Ik denk dat de kwaliteit van het deelnemersveld belangrijker is, alsmede het team waarin je bepaalde prestaties levert. Zo is de eindklassering van Max in de F3 in die auto en dat deelnemersveld misschien wel honderd keer knapper dan de titels van Stoffel of Palmer. Teams zullen in eerste instantie ook echt wel dat soort zaken meenemen. Zo is de titel van Stroll overal waar mogelijk gekocht. Dat is echt wat anders dan in een Van Amersfoort crossen.

  @RED SLOW lijkt me handiger als vanaf volgend jaar teams een chassis en motor van 2017 over mogen nemen om deel te nemen in 2018 met een coureur uit de F2.

  Weet je wat ik zou toejuichen? Een soort van standaardteam van de FIA zelf, waarin de F2-kampioen én een door teambazen gekozen talent uit de F2 de kans krijgen om 1 jaar Formule 1 te rijden. En dat zou dan een soort Minardi- of Manor-achtig team moeten zijn qua performance. Alleen op die manier kun je stellen dat de opstapklassen ook echt tot de F1 leiden. Na dat jaar kunnen ze bij een ander team terecht óf ze staan naast de kant. Nu halen nog steeds te veel echte talenten de F1 niet en te veel niet-talenten de F1 wel. Palmer, Stroll, Ericsson... Sorry, maar ondanks dat ze misschien beter kunnen rijden dan ik, hebben die niks in de F1 te zoeken als er ook nog mannen als Frijns en vele anderen rondlopen.

Als de FIA nu ook een F1 team opzet zodat de kampioen van de F2 gegarandeerd door stroomt naar dat team voor 2 jaar, dan zijn ze echt goed bezig.

  Dat is niet de taak van FIA.
  
  Dan kan beter een constructie maken met het toestaan van een 3e wagen. Daarin verplicht stellen dat de rijder van de 3e wagen maximaal 2 jaar gebruik mag maken van de 3e wagen. In het kort gezegd. het team bestaat uit 3 wagen. 2 rijders met 2 of meer seizoenen en 1 rijder met 2 of minder seizoenen F1.
  
  Op deze manier geef je jong talent de kans en hebben de teams de keuze of zij een 3e rijder laten rijden.

Dus omdat ze de naam van GP2 naar F2 veranderen moet de hele serie opnieuw van de grond krijgen? Beetje vreemd dit van Todt.

Wat nu als een succes wordt verkocht is eigenlijk een mislukking.
Aanvankelijk wilden ze F2 als nieuwe serie opzetten die dichter bij F1 zou staan en GP2 uiteindelijk zou verdringen. Dat blijkt onder andere uit het licentiepuntensysteem. Die opzet is dus mislukt. Waarschijnlijk waren er te weinig teams die in het nieuwe concept wilden investeren, dus uit arren moede heeft men dus maar een sticker over GP2 geplakt. Wel done Todt!

  Sterker nog Caramba: NIEMAND schreef zich in op de tender die de FIA voor de nieuwe F2 had uitgeschreven. Alleen Bruno Michel, de "bedrijfsleider"van de GP2, en pas nadat hij doorkreeg dat Bernie op weg naar de uitgang was. Daarom ook dat ze jaar na jaar de introductie van de nieuwe GP2-auto uitstelden.
