Tom Coronel dit jaar voor Honda in TCR Benelux

Honda laat opnieuw twee Civics aantreden in het TCR Benelux-kampioenschap, nadat het vorig jaar de constructeurstitel veroverde met het team Boutsen Ginion en de rijderstitel met Stéphane Lémeret.

De Civic nummer 1 zal bestuurd worden door het 'Benelux'-duo par excellence: Stéphane Lémeret en Tom Coronel. De WTCC-rijder kreeg vorig jaar al de kans om met een Civic te racen tijdens de ronde in Assen, waar hij eindigde in de slipstream van de winnaar, eveneens met een Civic: de officiële Honda-rijder in het WTCC, Norbert Michelisz. Ditmaal zal Tom Coronel het hele seizoen afwerken als teamgenoot van Stéphane Lémeret. Alleen zijn deelname aan de ronde in Zolder, op 16 juli, is nog twijfelachtig vanwege een kalenderprobleem.

Tom Coronel is dé Nederlandse touringwagenspecialist bij uitstek. Honda is dan ook verheugd te kunnen rekenen op zijn rijderstalenten, zijn ervaring en zijn enthousiasme, met één gemeenschappelijk doel: overwinningen en titels behalen. Deze samenwerking biedt Tom Coronel ook de kans om gedurende een heel seizoen dicht bij huis te racen, voor zijn fans. Met stip genoteerd is de ronde tijdens het weekend van 21 mei: dan vinden in Zandvoort de Jumbo Familie Racedagen - driven by Max Verstappen plaats, een echt autosportfeest in Nederland, waar Coronel natuurlijk wil schitteren voor het naar alle verwachtingen talrijke publiek.

Naast titelverdediger Stéphane Lémeret zal de Belgische eer ook verdedigd worden door Benjamin Lessennes in een tweede Civic van Boutsen Ginion. Deze veelbelovende jonge autocoureur van amper 17 jaar heeft zijn eerste 'leerjaar' afgesloten met een klinkende zege in de laatste manche van het voorbije TCR-kampioenschap in Mettet. Hij zal er alles aan doen om nieuwe overwinningen te verzamelen met een Civic die het nummer 2 draagt, als knipoog naar het nummer dat Stoffel Vandoorne heeft gekozen voor de Formule 1. Wie zijn teamgenoot wordt, moet nog bevestigd worden.

Voor dit tweede TCR Benelux-seizoen zijn Honda, Boutsen Ginion Racing en hun rijders ambitieus en vastberaden. Vol vertrouwen kijken ze uit naar de eerste ronde, die over een maand zal plaatsvinden op Spa-Francorchamps.

  Misschien een goeie aanloop om in 2018 ook met Honda in de WTCC te rijden. Ben van mening dat Honda daar gaat domineren.

  Maak je over de familie Coronel maar geen zorgen. De clan heeft tig goedlopende bv's om de hobby's te kunnen blijven betalen. En dan houden ze nog over.

Ben benieuwd hoe hij nu over McLaren/Honda praat bij Ziggo. Hij schroomt er over het algemeen niet voor om iemand helemaal af te branden en McLaren/Honda zou hij normaal gesproken helemaal de grond intrappen. Nu rijdt hijzelf voor Honda, ben benieuwd!

Leuk dat er een "naam" mee doet aan dit kampioenschap. Naast de aanwezigheid van het internationaal gewaardeerde WRT Team in het kampioenschap, zat er nog weinig van "aanzien" in deze klasse vorig jaar.

Overigens mooi ook om te zien dat er steeds meer merken meedoen in deze klasse.
De komst van bijvoorbeeld de Audi door Bas Koeten Racing. Vooralnog komt WRT niet met een Audi, maar ligt het plan er wel (evt. later dit jaar of volgend jaar), ook gezien hun sterke banden met Audi/VW. Tot op heden rijden ze dit jaar met de VW en Seat (met RADB support).

Het is ook wat meer dan wat we vroeger hadden met DTCC. Deze auto's gaan qua uiterlijk en geluid meer richting een soort mini-DTM.

Spectaculair om te zien, en zeker geen klasse die je moet overslaan wanneer ze op Zandvoort of Assen rijden. Zeker niet nu we ons Tommie kunnen zien rijden !
