Liberty Media vraagt Ecclestone GP van Brazilië te redden

Bernie Ecclestone staat nog steeds achter zijn beslissing om de Formule 1 uit te breiden naar andere delen van de wereld. Dat zegt hij in een interview met Craig Slater van Sky Sport News. De voormalig Formule 1-baas blijft erbij dat de uitbreiding naar Bahrein, China en Rusland de sport verder hebben gebracht.

Ik sloot contracten af met de KGB

Hij refereert aan de jaren '80 toen hij Hongarije aan de kalender toevoegde, nu een vertrouwde stop en sinds eind jaren '80 onafgebroken gastheer voor de Formule 1. Ecclestone: "Toen ik begon met Hongarije lag dat nog achter het IJzeren Gordijn. De contracten die ik afsloot waren met de KGB, zo ging dat toen." Maar hij wilde verder kijken dan alleen Europa: "De wereld is groter dan alleen Europa, daarom was het goed om ook naar Rusland, Baku en waar dan ook te gaan."

Geld was geen drijfveer

Geld was niet de grondslag voor Ecclestone om uit te breiden naar landen die onder vuur lagen vanwege schending van mensenrechten. "Waren we er naar toe gegaan als ze hetzelfde hadden betaald als Europese Grand Prix? Het antwoord is: ja." De Europeanen betaalden zo laat hij doorschemeren beduidend minder. "Ik hoop dat ze het niet horen, het voelt een beetje alsof ik ze heb afgezet namelijk. Maar ze waren gelukkig met de deal."

Maar waar nieuwe races werden toegevoegd, daar vallen oude bekende circuits weg. Brazilië dreigt weg te vallen terwijl daar dit jaar voor de 45e keer op rij een Grand Prix wordt gereden. Maar volgens Ecclestone heeft de nieuwe Formule 1-baas Chase Carey gevraagd om dat te voorkomen.

Even met de President praten

Ecclestone: "Het enige dat Chase mij gevraagd heeft om te doen, hij weet dat ik dit weekend naar Brazilië ga, is om te praten met de President om te zien of ik hem kan overhalen wat meer geld in de Grand Prix te steken."

Zo wordt het beeld bevestigd dat de contacten tussen Liberty Media en Bernie Ecclestone nog steeds goed zijn. Recent zei hij zich niet in de steek gelaten te voelen door Liberty Media.

Wat veel personen niet begrijpen op dit forum is dat de formule 1 ook gewoon een bedrijf is dat failliet kan gaan, Ecclestone heeft de formule 1 wel groot gemaakt. Wel ben ik het ermee eens dat hij de laatste jaren soms heeft overdreven is sommige zaken.

Het wegvallen van Interlagos zal voor mij als een bloedende wond aanvoelen maar ik denk dat de Brazilianen en hun incompetentie de eindeloze corruptie te stoppen de grote veroorzakers zijn van dit teloorgang. Wat een zonde.

Hetzelfde ouwe liedje, de overheid moet meer belastinggeld steken in onze duurbetaalde hobby. Uiteraard alles in naam van de kijker - die we natuurlijk ook laten betalen voor het kijken op zich, waaronder naar een ongelooflijke hoeveelheid reclame, waarvoor we ons natuurlijk ook weer laten betalen. Immers miljardair zijn is een dure hobby.

Hoe graag ik ook wil dat de GP van Brazilië behouden blijft, dat mag niet over de rug van de armoedige bevolking gaan. Geen belastingcenten naar ‘the happy few’ van de F1.

Laat Chase Carey de organisatie van de Braziliaanse GP maar een fikse korting geven vanwege ‘bewezen diensten’.
