Mercedes begint met Hamilton en Bottas op 'nul'

Het team van Mercedes had aan het eind van vorig seizoen meer last dan profijt van het koppel Nico Rosberg-Lewis Hamilton. Dat onthulde Mercedes-motorsportbaas Toto Wolff in gesprek met The Guardian. De rivaliteit tussen Rosberg en Hamilton liep de spuigaten uit. Rosberg bracht Mercedes in verlegenheid door na zijn titel zijn afscheid aan te kondigen, maar het bood het team ook uitkomst.

Door Valtteri Bottas aan Hamilton te koppelen is er nu een minder beladen line-up. Wolff: "Tegen het einde was de relatie tussen Rosberg en Hamilton meer intens dan dat het voordeel opleverde. Wat aan het begin voordelig was, het feit dat ze elkaar al twintig jaar kenden, betekende echter ook dat er veel bagage mee werd genomen en veel dingen speelden waar we ons niet bewust van waren. Met Bottas naast Hamilton beginnen we qua band tussen onze rijders op nul."

Hamilton trok de trukendoos vorig jaar in Abu Dhabi open in een ultieme poging om de titel voor de neus van Rosberg weg te kapen, tot afgrijzen van iedereen aan de pitmuur van Mercedes. Het team vaardigde teamorders uit. Een fout, gaf de Duitse renstal later toe. Wolff: "Natuurlijk rijdt Hamilton in de eerste plaats voor zichzelf, maar het is een kwestie van de doelstellingen afstemmen op die van het team. Ik heb veel respect voor hoe Lewis daar een juiste balans in gevonden heeft."

Drievoudig kampioen Hamilton krijgt in 2017 te maken met Bottas. De Fin is nog een relatief onbeschreven blad, hij kwam alleen nog maar uit voor Williams en wist nog geen race te winnen. Maar Bottas bezigt strijdvaardige taal in The Times. "Het wordt ongetwijfeld een moeilijk jaar tegen Lewis. Hij is een geweldige coureur, een kampioen en ik heb nog geen zege achter mijn naam, dus alle cijfers spreken in zijn voordeel. Maar ik weet waartoe ik in staat ben in een winnende auto."

Wat een raar stuk vol tegenstrijdige uitspraken! Toto Wolff over hoe enerzijds de rivaliteit aan het eind van het seizoen de spuigaten uitliep, en anderzijds zijn respect uitspreekt voor hoe Hamilton de juiste balans in persoonlijke strijd en teambelang heeft gevonden.

  Hij doelt op de coureurs onderling, Lewis en Nico kenden elkaar al sinds hun jeugd en kennen elkaars sterke en zwakke punten, nu met Bottas is het allemaal nieuw, ze kennen elkaar enkel van in de F1, daar doelt Toto op.

  Denk dat Lewis sowieso met minstens 1-0 voorstaat want neem aan dat hij wat minpunten van Bottas al kent: geen killer, niet doortastend, geen over mijn lijk mentaliteit, mentaal niet de allersterkste, geen superracer.

Het wordt interessant te zien hoe Bottas performt tov. Hamilton. Is Hamilton echt zo goed of worden zijn capaciteiten overdreven en maakt hij grotendeels gebruik van de superioriteit van de Mercedes? Hopelijk wordt 2017 een superjaar met scherpe duels tussen Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull en misschien af en toe een Williams.

  Wolff is een opportunist, @SolarCell. Als Nico geen afscheid had genomen, dan had hier een heel ander verhaal gestaan en werd Lewis in de hoek gezet en koos men voor Nico. Met net voldoende steun voor Lewis om hem weer tot favoriet te bombarderen als zou blijken dat hij een betere positie zou hebben.

Daarbij lijken ze bij Mercedes Bottas bewust als tweede rijder te willen vastpinnen. Maar ik moet het nog zien dat Hamilton hem consequent de baas is. Ik maak me er hier niet geliefd mee, maar ik vind Hamilton vooral een goede coureur in een superieure auto...

  En Bottas' eerste jaar daar én duidelijk 2e rijder, zorgt er alsnog voor dat de kromme heldenverering iig nog een jaartje door blijft gaan!

Ik denk dat als Bottas Hamilton een paar verslaat er weer stront aan de knikker is. Ik kan niet wachten tot het weer begint.

De lege prietpraat gaat maar door! Er gebeurt gewoon geen reet, dus verzinnen we maar wat non-nieuws. Bladvulling is het. Nog vijf nachtjes slapen (of wakker liggen) en het gaat weer over racen.
