De evolutie van de Mercedes W08 tijdens de tests

Het is misschien een cliché dat de wagens die de teams presenteren slechts een flauw aftreksel zijn van de auto's waarmee ze bij de eerste Grand Prix van het seizoen aan de start verschijnen, maar het is wel waar. Dat geldt zeker voor de topteams. De W08 van Mercedes onderging tijdens de wintertests bijvoorbeeld al een flinke metamorfose. Formula1.com zette alle wijzigingen op een rijtje.

Mercedes introduceerde bij de tweede test in Barcelona namelijk al een flink pakket updates voor de W08. De diffuser werd onder handen genomen en kreeg aan de buitenkant een extra laag, met een ronding aan de onderzijde en een sleuf aan de bovenzijde. Daarnaast nam de Duitse renstal een nieuwe voorvleugel en een andere configuratie brake ducts mee naar Circuit de Catalunya.

Een van de opstaande flappen op de voorvleugel, de flap het dichtst bij de punt van de neus, was voorzien van een sleuf. De brake ducts hadden tijdens de tweede testweek een andere vorm, net als de paddle fins aan de binnenkant van de voorwielen. De grootste veranderingen waren echter waarneembaar in het gedeelte tussen de voorwielen en de voorkant van de side-pods.

De voet van de turning vanes was voorzien van zogeheten 'tanden'. Dat zijn kleine stukjes bodywork vlak bij elkaar. Die tanden zien we ook terug bij de barge boards. De bedoeling daarvan is om vortexen te creëren en de luchtstromen richting de side-pods van een impuls te voorzien. Nieuw waren ook de tanden aan de voorkant van de barge boards en een winglet onder het chassis.

De Mercedes-AMG ziet eruit alsof de wagen een heel raceseizoen aan ontwikkeling achter de rug heeft, ik vrees het ergste voor de concurrentie.

  Al die vinnetjes en flapjes zijn bedoeld om de airflow te corrigeren. Als het bodywork dusdanig ontworpen is dat correctie minimaal nodig is, dan is dat te prefereren, denk ik.
  
  Ik hoop dus ook een minimum aan flapjes en vinnetjes op de auto van Max te zien, dan komt het goed :-)

Donders wat een bonke flapjes flipjes en floepjes op die Benz, zo zou ik graag bij meer teams zien wat die ontwikkeld/veranderd hebben tijdens de 2 weken test in Barcelona.
