Jenson Button stapt in M23 uit 1974 van Emerson Fittipaldi

Jenson Button gaat in augustus weer voor het eerst zijn opwachting maken in een racewagen sinds hij aan het einde van vorig seizoen de Formule 1 de rug toekeerde. De wereldkampioen van 2009 zal een demonstratierace rijden in de McLaren M23 tijdens de Rolex Motorsports Reunion.

De M23 van Fittipaldi

Button die zijn carrière afsloot bij het team van McLaren gaat achter het stuur van de wagen stappen waarin Emerson Fittipaldi in 1974 wereldkampioen werd. "Het is altijd speciaal om in een Formule 1 wagen te rijden met zo'n roemruchte historie. De M23 schreef één van de belangrijkste hoofdstukken in de geschiedenis van de autosport", aldus Button.

'Zeer eenvoudig om te rijden'

Over de auto zegt Button: "Het is een rare gewaarwording om een auto uit dat tijdperk te rijden. Je zit erg rechtop en het is bijna alsof je de voorwielen kan aanraken." Maar niets dan complimenten voor de M23: "Als je er in rijdt snap je direct waarom hij zo succesvol was. Hij is zeer eenvoudig om te rijden, heeft een goede balans en alles wat je er in stopt komt er ook weer uit. De rijder wordt op zijn wenken bediend."

Het event wordt van 17 tot 20 augustus gehouden op de Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Californië. Jenson Button zal op donderdag 17 augustus zijn opwachting maken in de M23 van McLaren.

Jenson weer boven water, wat leuk. En net als Stroll begint hij in een wat ouder model om weer in de stemming te komen.

Mooie bolide was dat. McLaren was toen al een topteam en met de doorontwikkelde M23 werd twee jaar later James Hunt ook nog wereldkampioen (eerste race M23 in ’73 en laatste pas in ’77).

En ik maar denken dat de wagens van toen alleen bestuurd konden worden door echte kerels. En dat je flink moest werken om die auto's op de baan te houden. Blijkt dat die auto heel makkelijk te rijden is. #beetjetegenvallertje

Vergeet niet dat Button fitter is dan menig coureur uit die tijd en de wagen steeds "simpeler" af te stellen is met de kennis van nu.

Daarnaast hoeft Button niet te rijden voor leven en dood, scheelt een hoop.
