Canada lyrisch over nieuw Formule 1-management

Francois Dumontier, de promotor van de Grand Prix van Canada, ziet de Formule 1 een schitterende toekomst tegemoet gaan en dat allemaal dankzij de komst van Liberty Media als nieuwe eigenaar. De Canadees verlengde eerder het contract voor zijn evenement op het circuit van Montreal met de koningsklasse van de autosport tot en met 2029. Zoveel vertrouwen heeft hij in de plannen van Liberty Media.

Dumontier zegt op JamesAllenOnF1.com: "Het is het einde van het ene tijdperk en het begin van een ander tijdperk. Wat Liberty roept in de media is goed om te horen. Ze willen een meer democratisch model in het leven roepen, ze willen live evenementen rondom de races en ze willen de sport meer open en toegankelijk maken voor de fans. Dat zijn goede ideeën. Die veranderingen zullen in 2017 nog niet van de grond komen. We moeten ze de tijd geven en kijken naar 2018 en 2019."

Meer F1-races in de VS

Liberty is wel van plan om meer Grands Prix in de Verenigde Staten te houden, maar Dumontier is niet bang voor concurrentie. "Ik heb Liberty laten weten dat Montreal de Noord-Amerikaanse basis van de Formule 1 is en dat ze voor hulp of advies altijd bij me aan kunnen kloppen. Hoe meer de Formule 1 in het nieuws komt, des te meer aandacht er voor de sport is en des te beter het ook voor ons is."

"Ik denk dat Liberty het zal beperken tot twee of drie races in de VS. We weten niet wat er met het evenement op het Circuit of the Americas nabij Austin zal gebeuren in de toekomst, en Liberty heeft het al over Miami en Las Vegas gehad." Een race in New Jersey met de skyline van New York als achtergrond kwam tijdens het Grand Prix-weekend in Australië ook weer ter sprake.

Renovatie voor 2019

Met Bernie Ecclestone leefde Dumontier op gespannen voet, bijvoorbeeld omdat de beloofde renovatie van de faciliteiten op het Circuit Gilles Villeneuve maar niet gerealiseerd werd. De verbouwing gaat er nu echt van komen. "Het is listig, want ze moeten tussen de races van 2017 en 2018 de planning maken en dan tussen de races van 2018 en 2019 moeten ze bouwen. Voor 2019 wordt de nieuwe pits opgeleverd. Dat was al afgesproken tussen Bernie, mijzelf en de stad Montreal. De komst van Liberty heeft daar geen invloed op gehad."

  Nee, eerder dat beloftes worden nagekomen en dat organisatoren van races meer mogelijkheden krijgen om de fans een mooi race weekend voor te schotelen.

Het is goed dat Bernie ermee gestopt is [uitgekocht], dat had eigenlijk al een 5 jaar geleden moeten gebeuren. Bernie heeft het goed gedaan, alleen zijn er nu andere tijden, en dat werkt niet meer op de manier dat Bernie dat deed.

Liberty is een goede naam voor hun eigen financieele vrijheid en die van hun aandeelhouders. Liberty wil geld verdienen en dat is alles. De F1 interesseert ze verder geen zak. Mensen zijn zo naief. Een mooi race weekend? Wat is racen als je elkaar niet kunt inhalen? Harder geluid? Het geluid is nu al niet om aan te horen zo hard. Je bent blij als het is afgelopen. Tussendoor naar de GP en/of porschecup kijken is niet te doen. De hele tijd in 105-110 db zitten is heel vermoeiend en ben je blij als je oren rust krijgen. F1 geluid is niet op de TV te horen of het nu een V6 of V10 is. Maakt geen enkel verschil. Een optocht op tv is een optocht op tv. Moet je in China naar die 'Battles' for position kijken. Lachwekkend en droevig tegelijkertijd.
