Sponsor Petronas trekt zich niet terug uit de Formule 1

Maleisië maakte vandaag bekend dat het na dit jaar stopt met de organisatie van een Grand Prix. In goed overleg met Formula One Management is besloten om het contract na 2017 te ontbinden. De Maleisische Grand Prix maakt sinds 1999 onderdeel uit van de Formule 1-kalender.

Dit nieuws heeft verder geen consequenties voor de betrokkenheid van Petronas bij de Formule 1. De Maleisische oliemaatschappij is een belangrijke partner van het team van Mercedes. Petronas trekt zich echter niet terug uit de sport, vernam persbureau Bernama van premier Najib Razak.

Sean Bratches, commercieel directeur in de Formule 1, bedankte Maleisië al voor de gastvrijheid en het professionalisme door de jaren heen. Razak is op zijn beurt FOM dankbaar. "Ik waardeer het begrip vanuit de Formule 1 om tot een overeenkomst te komen voor de ontbinding van het contract."
