Nico Hülkenberg zou nooit een F1-race overslaan

Renault-coureur Nico Hülkenberg heeft met verbazing kennisgenomen van het nieuws dat McLaren-collega Fernando Alonso dit jaar aan de Indy 500 meedoet. Niet zozeer de deelname aan de Indy 500 wekt verbazing, maar meer het feit dat de Spanjaard daar de Grand Prix van Monaco voor laat schieten. Dat zou Hülkenberg nooit doen.

De Duitser is bekend met uitstapjes naar andere evenementen; hij deed zelf in 2015 namens Porsche mee aan de 24 uur van Le Mans. Hülkenberg: "In mijn situatie was het heel iets anders. Ik sloeg er geen Formule 1-race voor over. Ik zou het nooit hebben gedaan als ik er een race voor zou moeten missen, zeker niet Monaco. Ik ben dan ook wel een beetje verbaasd."

"Ik weet niet veel van de Indy 500, maar Alonso heeft nog nooit met zo'n auto op een oval gereden. Denkt hij echt dat je gewoon aan de start kunt verschijnen en meteen maar zo makkelijk kunt winnen? Ik had vooraf minimaal een half jaar voorbereiding. Het klinkt als een enorme uitdaging, maar daar houdt Fernando wel van."

Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen begrijpt de keuze van Alonso wel, al zou hij het zelf ook niet zo snel doen. "In de Formule 1 valt hij steeds uit of moet hij blij zijn met een tiende plaats, dus ik snap zijn afweging heel goed. De Indy 500 is immers iets nieuws. Bovendien heeft hij een reële kans om mee te strijden voor de overwinning."

"Hij heeft nog nooit in zo'n auto gezeten en dan meteen de Indy 500 rijden, dat heeft wel iets. Ik vind het wel stoer. Mijn problemen zijn niet zo groot als die van Alonso. Ik kan dit seizoen tenminste nog een keer op het podium eindigen of strijden om de vijfde plek", verkondigde de Nederlander aan De Telegraaf.

  Heeft Alonso zelf idd ook al gezegd dat als er enige kans op podiumfinishes etc was geweest gij t niet had gedaan. Het idee is bij Zak Brown vandaan

Snap Fernando heel goed. De ambitie om competitief te zijn is heel groot, en dat is hij met de McLaren niet. Nico heeft wel een punt m.b.t. het feit dat hij nog nooit in die auto en op ovals heeft gereden. Alsof er in de Indy alleen maar koekenbakkers meedoen. Winnen gaat hij denk ik niet.

Was ook mijn eerste reactie , een f1 race geef je toch niet zo maar op. En laat het nu net Monaco zijn waar de snelheid minder belangrijk is en de Honda motor toch in de punten kan rijden (zeker als het dan nog regent). Maar ik denk dat Honda of McLaren zelf aan Alonso gevraagd heeft of hij zin heeft om dit avontuur te doen . Dacht gelezen te hebben dat het een McLaren wagen was, met een Honda motor , in een Amerikaans team.

Begrijp het wel, als het maximaal haalbare p10 is en je gemiddeld rond p12-15 rijdt dan ga je een andere uitdaging aan. Rijd je nu voor het podium dan wordt het een ander verhaal
