Van China naar Bahrein; de logistieke nachtmerrie

Het hele Formule 1-circus heeft zich deze week verplaatst van China naar Bahrein. Het is de eerste zogenaamde back-to-back van het seizoen; twee races in twee opeenvolgende weekenden. Het is voor de teams logistiek gezien een enorme opgave om het materiaal en het personeel binnen enkele dagen van de ene naar de andere locatie te verplaatsen.

McLaren-coördinator Clare Martin vertelde aan de NOS: "Drie medewerkers van ons team waren al tijdens de Chinese Grand prix in Bahrein om te beginnen met het opbouwen van de pitbox, de ontvangstruimte en het uitpakken van de zeecontainers Twaalf van onze engineers vlogen zondagnacht al naar Bahrein. De overige 45 collega's volgden maandag. Terwijl Stoffel Vandoorne en Fernando Alonso nog aan het racen waren in China, waren wij dus al bezig met de volgende grand prix."

"Deze back-to-back-races zijn een aanslag op de gezondheid van de crew. De seizoensstart is extra slopend. We hebben iedereen daarom na de eerste grand prix in Melbourne naar huis gehaald en een paar dagen later vanaf London weer naar Shanghai laten vliegen. Dat is beter, al levert het maar een paar dagen op. Anders zijn we allemaal zes weken van huis."

Coureurs

Voor de rijders is het minder zwaar. "Voor ons als coureurs is het niet zo’n offer. Wij willen het liefst elk weekend racen", zegt drievoudig wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton. "Maar voor het team is het loodzwaar. Iedereen reist veel, maakt extreem lange dagen, is uren achtereen op de been en mist de familie."

"Maar ik weet van mijn crew een ding zeker: ze zijn zo dol op hun werk dat ze eindeloos door kunnen gaan. Dit is hun droombaan. Ze zouden niets anders willen en klagen nooit. Het is fantastisch om met zo'n enthousiaste ploeg mensen te werken."

Force India-rijder Sergio Perez is kritisch. "Zo'n back-to-back-race overkomt ons twee keer per seizoen. Dat is wel de limiet, anders wordt het roofbouw. Drie keer is echt niet te doen. Mijn monteurs zijn hier van 's ochtends vroeg tot 's avonds laat. Ik heb zelf genoeg tijd om te relaxen, maar zij niet. Het is een uitputtingsslag, zeker in deze woestijnhitte."

  6 weken tuut tuut... Ik werk als OM of PM op olie en gas projecten op de meest onmogelijke plaatsten in de wereld.. 6/2 rotatie is heel gewoon en ik zou niet anders willen :)

Sowieso denk ik dat een familie hebben en fulltime in de F1 werken niet bij elkaar past. Je relatie met vrouw en/of kinderen heeft er in ieder geval flink onder te lijden.
