Team Penske domineert kwalificatie op Barber Motorsports Park

Het team van Penske heeft de kwalificatie voor de IndyCar-race op Barber Motorsports Park gedomineerd. Will Power start de race vanaf pole, gevolgd door teamgenoten Helio Castroneves en Simon Pagenaud. Kampioenschapsleider Sebastian Bourdais viel tegen, hij kwam in de bolide van Dale Coyne niet verder dan een twaalfde startplaats.

Dat Penske dominant was lieten de tijden wel zien, de snelste niet-Penske coureur was Scott Dixon op de vierde plaats, maar de Nieuw-Zeelander moest meer dan zes tienden toegeven op de snelste tijd van Power. Achter Dixon completeerden Ryan Hunter-Reay en James Hinchcliffe de top zes.

Verrassing in de top tien was Max Chilton. De Britse-coureur van Chip Ganassi moest tot dusver flink toegeven op teamgenoten Dixon en Kanaan, maar kon nu met de ervaren rotten meekomen. Chilton reed een keurige achtste tijd, voor zijn teamgenoot Tony Kanaan.

Dat Bourdais niet in de top zes start is te danken aan het feit dat de Fransman geen run kon doen op vers rubber. Bourdais concentreerde zich in de trainingen op de raceafstelling en afgaande op de racesnelheid zou Bourdais alsnog een goede race moeten kunnen rijden.
