Stoffel Vandoorne: "Max Verstappen mag mijn oranje auto wel lenen hoor!"

Stoffel Vandoorne beleeft een verschrikkelijk seizoen tot dusverre, in de Grand Prix van Bahrein ging de Belg niet eens van start. NOS Sport sprak met Vandoorne die voor het eerst in zijn leven achteraan rijdt.

Gewend aan pole positions

Over de mislukte seizoenstart vertelt de McLaren-coureur dat het team verwachtte na twee slechte jaren weer een beter seizoen te draaien, maar zelfs de middenmoot is ver weg. Hoe het is om nu voor het eerst niet mee te strijden om het podium zegt hij: "Het is een flinke overgang. Ik was inderdaad gewend aan pole positions en zeges. Het overkomt me nu voor het eerst dat ik bij voorbaat weet dat ik kansloos ben, maar ik denk dat het mij als mens en coureur sterker kan maken."

Harde woorden bij McLaren

Het is niet makkelijk voor Vandoorne om met de tegenslagen om te gaan zo zegt hij: "Uiteraard is het lastig. Ik ben meer een vechter dan een diplomaat. Intern vallen harde woorden, maar die houden we bij McLaren binnenskamers. Zoals het hoort."

Het interview sluit af met een vraag over zijn thuiscircuit waar veel Nederlanders komen die in het Oranje gekleed zullen zijn, dezelfde kleur als de wagen van Stoffel Vandoorne: "Haha, de Hollandse kleur. Ja, da's jammer voor Max he. Maar hij mag mijn oranje auto wel lenen hoor! Dan neem ik zijn Red Bull wel een weekendje over. Graag zelfs."

      Hoezo? Het is een win-win situatie voor iedereen, (Sauber, Honda, McLaren). Sauber zal dit jaar voorlaatste (of laatste als Honda verbetert) in de ranking eindigen. En volgend jaar laatst (of hogerop als Honda verbetert). Naast de motoren krijgen ze van Honda waarschijnlijk ook een zak geld... Honda heeft meer track-time en kan de motoren sneller ontwikkelen. McLaren blij met snellere ontwikkeling en een tweede Honda partner die ze chassis-matig altijd de baas kunnen.

      Tenzij mclaren er na dit jaar de brui aangeeft en volgend jaar terug een merc achterin legt.

      Gaat nooit gebeuren. Die blijven bij Honda, als Honda er in de F1 zelf niet de brui aan geeft (de Sauber deal bewijst van niet). Honda heeft zich eens stevig verslikt, dat is alles, ze zijn groot genoeg om het tij te doen keren. Dat het wat schuurt tussen McLaren en Honda is niet meer dan normaal, maar ze weten dat ze elkaar nodig hebben om hogerop in de ranking te komen, en uiteindelijk voor podiums te strijden.

      No prob Zambiorix. Is een goede stap voor Sauber en Honda, en ik geloof ook voor Mclaren. Weet alleen niet of ze nog geduld kunnen opbrengen.

      Toont wel aan dat Honda het nog steeds meent en er blijft in geloven.
      Dat siert hen wel. Sauber kan de centen gebruiken en ben ook benieuwd wie volgend jaar in de Saubers zal rijden. Gezien Wehrlein aan Merc gebonden is denk ik dat hij alweer mag uitkijken naar een nieuw team...

    Zover is McLaren-Honda al gevallen dat het normaal is om je eigen auto in het openbaar belachelijk te maken of er lollig over te doen. Zelfs Stoffel doet er al mee, maar wat moet hij anders op een gegeven moment.

    Wens ze bij McLaren-Honda veel sterkte om hier nog uit te komen.

      Is echt balen dat hij niets kan tonen.
      Nu hebben we een goede piloot in de F1 en dan moet hij met zo'n grasmaaier rijden.

      Ongelooflijk ook hoer er soms in Belgie naar gekeken wordt, met onterechte kritiek.
      Mensen die er niets van kennen en een scherpe pen boven halen.

      Nooit sand in eigen land heet dat dan.

      Erg veel respect voor hem als persoon en weet zeker dat hij hard kan rijden. Nu nog wachten op de juiste bolide.
