Russische Grand Prix wordt geen nachtrace

Toen de Formule 1 in 2014 voor het eerst op het Sochi Autodrom neerstreek sprak Bernie Ecclestone al snel de wens uit dat de race in de toekomst onder kunstlicht verreden zou moeten worden. De plannen zijn echter nooit echt concreet geworden en worden nu ook tegensproken door Dmitry Kozak, een Russische minister.

Ecclestone werd gisteren tijdens de kwalificatie gespot in Sochi en zou in Rusland zijn om de toekomst van de Grand Prix veilig te stellen. Sochi Autodrom heeft een contract tot en met 2025, maar de Russische president Vladimir Poetin liet eerder weten de race niet meer financieel te willen ondersteunen. Om de kosten voor organisatie van de race in de toekomst te drukken, lijkt het plan voor een nachtrace definitief van de baan.

"Formule 1 heeft een nieuw management en er zijn twijfels of we in de toekomst een nachtrace moeten houden. De beelden op TV zijn heel belangrijk voor de fans en wij zijn tevreden met hoe het nu is. Overdag racen geeft een veel beter beeld van de omgeving", aldus Kozak.
