Sauber-teambaas Kaltenborn weet zeker dat Honda zich zal verbeteren

Gisteren werd officieel bekend gemaakt dat Sauber vanaf volgend seizoen met Honda-motoren zal rondrijden. Gezien de huidige prestaties van de Honda-motoren bij het team van McLaren zullen Sauber-fans zich wellicht zorgen maken, al gaat het nu ook nog niet geweldig dit seizoen. Volgens teambaas Monisha Kaltenborn is dat nergens voor nodig.

Kaltenborn overtuigd van Honda

Kaltenborn ziet mooie tijden voor het team in het vooruitzicht: "Of ik denk dat Honda zich zal verbeteren? Dat weet ik wel zeker. Ik herinner mij de situatie van andere motorfabrikanten en kijk waar die nu staan. Honda zal daar geen uitzondering op zijn." Het team van Sauber rijdt nu rond met de Ferrari-motor van 2016 en wist nog geen WK punten te halen. De Grand Prix van Rusland was wel de eerste race waarbij zowel Marcus Ericsson en Pascal Wehrlein de finish wisten te halen.

Geen hulp van andere teams

Er zijn geruchten geweest dat Honda mogelijk hulp zou krijgen van andere teams, maar FIA's Charlie Whiting zegt tegen de krant AS: "De analyse had niet tot doel om bepaalde teams te gaan helpen maar om te bekijken of de genomen maatregelen, zoals het afschaffen van het tokensysteem, het gewenste effect heeft gehad om de teams dichterbij elkaar te brengen. En dat is zo."

  Dat zou dus echt het domste zijn wat Honda kan doen. Het gaat er juist om dat ze meer data over de huidige motor (van 2018 dus) krijgen.

  Sauber altijd een jaar achter loopt? Dit is de eerste keer dat Sauber met een jaar oude motor rijdt. Hoezo altijd? En zoals @PIXEL al aangeeft zou het onzinnig zijn voor Honda om ze een jaar oude motor te geven.

Natuurlijk gaat Honda zich verbeteren. Voor Sauber is dit top. Beter dan rijden met de afdankertjes van Ferrari. Honda heeft in het verleden ook laten zien dat ze in staat zijn om een top motor te bouwen. Denk dat Sauber er alleen maar vooruit op kan gaan.

Prima actie van Kaltenborn, Honda krijgt de problemen echt wel boven water en dan is de kans groot dat Sauber een fraaie stap voorwaarts kan maken.
Bovendien is met de ongetwijfeld lucratieve deal de toekomst van Sauber voor meerdere jaren verzekerd.

Honda kan het zich nu zeker niet permitteren om er bijvoorbeeld maar uit te stappen.
Dat zou helemaal gezichtsverlies zijn. Daar hebben oosterlingen een broertje dood aan.
