McLaren-baas Zak Brown ziet graag een Grand Prix in Londen

Eerder deze week werd bekend dat er voorafgaand aan de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië op Silverstone Formule 1-wagens mogelijk door de straten van Londen gaan rijden. Daarover worden gesprekken gevoerd tussen de lokale autoriteiten en Liberty Media. Dat voedt de geruchten dat een Grand Prix in Londen ook mogelijk zou moeten zijn. McLaren-directeur Zak Brown vindt dat een prima idee. 

Brown tegen de Daily Star: "Ik zou graag een Grand Prix in Londen zien. Als je een stratenrace houdt dan wil je een aantal belangrijke punten in het circuit opnemen zodat je direct ziet in welke stad je bent. Volgens de directeur van de Britse renstal zijn er meerdere punten die daarvoor in aanmerking komen: "Of dat Buckingham Palace is of de Big Ben, ik heb geen idee,  maar ik wil inschakelen en direct zeggen: 'dat is Londen'", aldus Brown.

In het verleden zijn er al eens ideeën geweest voor een Grand Prix in de Engelse hoofdstad en daar werden beide punten in opgenomen. Bernie Ecclestone haalde het idee in 2012 weer van stal en werd gesteund door de toenmalig burgemeester Boris Johnson. Ook zijn opvolger Sadiq Kahn schiet het idee niet bij voorbaat af.

    Nou ben ik niet van de echte stratencircuits , maar een race in Londen zie ik toch wel zitten .
    In ieder geval vanwege de mooie stad en locatie die Londen natuurlijk is .

      Marketingtechnisch misschien wel leuk, maar doe mij maar een race op Silverstone ipv weer een stratenrace/optocht..

      Brown: “... maar ik wil inschakelen en direct zeggen: ‘dat is Londen’.”

      En ik schakel liever in en direct zeggen: dat is een circuit waar je echt spannende races kunt verwachten, de omgeving zal me werkelijk worst wezen. De (culturele) toerist hang ik wel buiten de F1 uit.

    Laat ze er eerst maar eens voor zorgen dat een prachtig circuit als Silverstone een nieuw en langdurig contract krijgt. Ik zou het zonde vinden als bestaande en historische Grand Prix circuits eventueel moeten wijken voor een stratencircuit in een land. Zorg er voor dat de permanente circuits ook geld kunnen verdienen aan een GP, daar hebben alle andere auto en motorsportklasses die op zo'n circuit racen ook gemak van.

    nee dankje 1 Britse GP is wel genoeg...mag de rest vd wereld aub ook meedoen? Ik zie liever nog een GP erbij in Noord Amerika én Zuid-Amerika.

    Logisch dat Zak een GP in Londen wil, dan kan McLaren makkelijker en sneller nieuwe onderdelen uit de fabriek laten komen zodat ze toch nog van start kunnen gaan.

    Mij maakt dat weinig uit, het belangrijkste moet zijn, dat een 12 of meer auto's kunnen strijden om het podium. Waar dat dan gereden zal worden vind ik nu van minder belang.
