Langere DRS-zone loonde bij Spaanse Grand Prix

De internationale autosportbond FIA besloot afgelopen weekend op verzoek van de coureurs om de DRS-zone op het rechte stuk van start en finish op het Circuit de Catalunya met honderd meter te verlengen. Die beslissing betaalde zich uit. De Spaanse Grand Prix telde zondag achttien inhaalacties, waaronder enkele manoeuvres van ongekende schoonheid.

Zoals de manier waarop Sebastian Vettel voorbij ging aan Valtteri Bottas. Vettel werd later in de race zelf ingehaald door Lewis Hamilton. De Mercedes-coureur verklaarde aan Auto Motor und Sport: "Zonder de verlenging van de DRS-zone zou het veel moeilijker zijn geweest om in te halen, misschien zelfs onmogelijk. Het gaf me precies die vier tot zes meter extra die ik nodig had."

Williams-rijder Felipe Massa was de drijvende kracht achter de langere DRS-zone. De Braziliaan had in de rijdersbriefing gevraagd om de DRS-zone te verlengen. Sauber-coureur Marcus Ericsson was de inhaalkoning in Spanje met drie inhaalacties. De Zweed ging twee keer Lance Stroll voorbij en passeerde één maal Fernando Alonso.

De FIA zal nu per weekend bekijken of het de DRS-zones moet en kan verlangen. Voor Silverstone, Boedapest, Suzuka en Abu Dhabi zou de federatie al een langere DRS-zone overwegen, meldt Auto Motor und Sport. Op andere circuits is de bond aan handen en voeten gebonden. In Monaco is het bijvoorbeeld onmogelijk om de DRS-zone uit te breiden.

  Ja, t was zo vet dat ondanks vrouw en kinderen naar oma waren, en mij de tijd gaven de race te kijken dat ik 14:20 ook daar aan de slappe koffie zat te trekken. Het leuke stukje van de race was het uitzetten van de TV.
  
  Kan het me niet goed herinneren, maar ik heb zelfs het idee dat ik ergens tussen rondje 3 en 5 even geslapen heb op de bank, vervolgens 10 minuten gezocht na de afstandsbediening omdat kreng uit te krijgen.
  
  tot zover de GP van Spanje ....
  
  Wie nu iets wil roepen over Vettel/Hamilton strijd, heeft echt een klap van de molen gehad, 2 toppers die met kunstmatige onzin betrokken zijn bij een inhaalactie. Dagelijk rijdt ik met 125km/s over de a12 alwaar ik spannendere inhaalacties maak. *Gaap*

  hmmm ik vermoed dat als max uitvalt het licht bij jullie ook uitgaat?
  ook ik moest even slikken maar ik heb me eigenlijk prima vermaakt bij deze race.
  en het gezeik over drs moet eens ophouden, f1 is wat het is en drs hoort er op het moment bij.
  het gezanik over "ëchte" inhaalacties is nostalgisch gezever zonder enige grond.
  ook nu moeten rijders namelijk alles uit de kast halen om de actie tussen twee gelijkwaardige autos door te kunnen zetten en dat is waar het om gaat.
  ik had voorafgaand aan de gp gedacht dat er hooguit twee inhaalacties zouden zijn maar ik was aangenaam verrast.
  die langere drs is een super ingreep gebleken.

Ik dacht dat het geen drol zou uitmaken maar ik zat er naast. Het maakte wel degelijk een verschil.

Sainz hielp het niet om die Sauber met 2016 krachtbronop 1-stop strategie in te halen.
Apart, als hij wel inhaalt kost het hem vaak direct 5 seconden aan straftijd. Nu hóefde hij niet in te halen vanwege Wehrlein's 5 seconden. Niet de manier waarop je 7e wilt worden, omdat een Sauber coureur een tijdstraf had wegens het verkeerd de pits inrijden (meer Sainz' ding vroeger).
