Achterzijde Formule 1-wagens aangepast na crash Billy Monger

Naar aanleiding van het ongeval van Billy Monger heeft de Formule 1 de teams opgedragen de achterzijde van de auto aan te passen. Billy Monger reed hard achterop een voorganger en verloor uiteindelijk beide onderbenen.

Het gaat hier om de steunpunten waaraan de auto wordt opgetild bij de pitstops. Bij een crash kunnen deze punten als eerste in aanraking komen met de auto die achterop komt. In een brief aan de teams schreef FIA-veiligheidsdirecteur Laurent Mekies: "Na een aantal kop-staart aanrijdingen de afgelopen maanden in diverse raceklassen verzoekt de FIA alle Formule 1-teams de achterste steunpunten zo aan te passen dat ze minder 'agressief' zijn tijdens zo'n ongeval."

Deze punten waar de krik aan bevestigd wordt kunnen deze als eerste de achteropkomende wagen raken en ernstige schade toebrengen. Dit is wat gebeurde tijdens de crash van Billy Monger. Formule 1-journalist Michael Schmidt: "Op woensdag heeft Jo Bauer alle wagens gecontroleerd of zij aan de nieuwe richtlijnen voldeden."
