Williams zet zichzelf in het zonnetje op Silverstone

Het team van Williams bestaat 40 jaar en dat is reden voor een feestje. De Britse renstal heeft voor vandaag een evenement ter ere van het 40-jarige bestaan georganiseerd op Silverstone. Er stonden vanochtend al lange rijen fans voor de toegangspoorten van het circuit. Williams zal onder meer met diverse oude auto's, waaronder de klassieke FW14/B uit 1992, de baan op gaan.

De eerste

De eerste Formule 1-race van Williams was in 1977. Frank Williams richtte samen met Patrick Head Williams Grand Prix Engineering op. Het team deed dat jaar aan elf Grands Prix mee. Williams maakte toen nog gebruik van een March 761-chassis, met Patrick Neve als coureur. De eerste race was in Spanje. De eerste wedstrijd met een eigen auto was Argentinië 1978.

De eerste zege volgde in 1979. Door enkele subtiele modificaties aan de FW07, met extra aluminium panelen om het ground-effect van de wagen te verbeteren, was Williams in de thuisrace op Silverstone een kracht om rekening mee te houden. Alan Jones domineerde de kwalificatie en behaalde pole position, maar door een waterlek was het teamgenoot Clay Regazzoni die Williams de eerste overwinning bezorgde.

De titels

Het team van Williams heeft in totaal 114 Grands Prix op haar naam geschreven. De laatste dateert uit 2012, toen Pastor Maldonado verrassend triomfeerde in Spanje. Nigel Mansell won 28 keer in een Williams. Damon Hill behaalde 21 van zijn 22 zeges op het hoogste niveau met een Williams, terwijl Alan Jones en Jacques Villeneuve de derde plek delen met ieder elf maal winst namens Williams.

Williams heeft zeven keer de titel bij de coureurs voor zich opgeëist. Alan Jones was in 1980 de eerste. Later kroonden Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill en Jacques Villeneuve zich nog namens de Britse renstal tot kampioen. Williams veroverde negen maal de wereldtitel voor constructeurs, in 1997 voor het laatst.

  Zeker met de 14B , die auto had bijna alle driving aids en volgens lauda volgens mij zou er zelfs een aap die auto fatsoenlijk kunnen rijden ...

Sinds 1991 volg ik de formule 1 en met hart en ziel altijd voor Williams gejuicht. Toen ik van dit event hoorde wilde ik er bij zijn, zeker toen bekend werd dat Mansell de red 5 vandaag zal rijden. Maar iets met vrouw en kinderen en aanstaande vakantie en gaat al genoeg geld kosten. Ik ben hier gewoon echt ziek van dat ik er niet bij kan zijn. Maar het neemt niet weg dat dit een geweldig event is en dat Williams altijd samen met Ferrari en McLaren qua historische waarde boven Mercedes en Red Bull zullen blijven staan. Maakt niet uit hoeveel demo rondjes Red Bull nog geeft of hoeveel titels Mercedes nog zal winnen.

  Spijt me wel hoor maar dan weet je echt niet waar je over praat,,, en raad je ten zeerste aan om de race-historie van Mercedes is te googelen.... Notabene de pioniers achter het autoracen, en ook GP ...
