'Vertrek Lowe niet oorzaak voor terugval Mercedes'

Mercedes-motorsportbaas Toto Wolff bestrijdt dat het vertrek van Paddy Lowe ten grondslag ligt aan de terugval van de Duitse renstal dit seizoen. Mercedes deelde de voorbije drie seizoenen de lakens uit in de Formule 1, maar ondervindt nu veel weerstand van concurrent Ferrari. Lowe stapte eerder dit jaar over naar het team van Williams.

Er is echter geen verband te leggen tussen diens afwezigheid en de mindere prestaties van Mercedes, betoogt Wolff in Sport Bild. "Paddy is een uitstekende engineer voor wie ik enorm veel respect heb. Maar succes is in onze sport niet afhankelijk van grote namen of individuen. Een gebalanceerde structuur met de juiste mensen op de juiste plekken is veel belangrijker."

"In mijn ogen is dat precies wat we hebben bij Mercedes. In tijden van tegenslag besef je hoe sterk een team echt is en ik zou niet trotser kunnen zijn op de manier waarop onze teamleden met de huidige situatie omgaan. We houden beide benen op de grond, iedereen is gefocust op het oplossen van onze problemen en we genieten van het duel met Ferrari. Dat is waar het in autosport om draait, de strijd aanbinden met de beste concurrenten."
