Mercedes benut trainingen om met set-up te stoeien

Het team van Mercedes gaat de vrije trainingen voor de Canadese Grand Prix later vandaag gebruiken om flink wat dingen met de afstelling uit te proberen. De Duitse renstal is op zoek naar antwoorden op de vraag waarom het ze zoveel moeite kost om de banden in het ideale raamwerk te krijgen. Concurrent Ferrari springt dit seizoen veel beter met het rubber om.

Coureur Lewis Hamilton legt uit: "De manier waarop de banden bij ons grip geven, verschilt per Grand Prix. We hebben wel wat geanalyseerd en moeten het hier zien te verbeteren. Dat is best lastig, want het is erg afhankelijk van de baantemperatuur. Soms zit er gewoon geen gevoel in het rubber, terwijl er op een ander moment opeens wel grip is."

Teamgenoot Valtteri Bottas voegt toe: "We hebben voor Canada wat nieuwe dingen bij die we in de trainingen op vrijdag zullen uitproberen. Zo komen we met het gewicht van de auto steeds meer in de buurt van het minimumgewicht. Soms hebben we echt het gevoel dat we op eieren rijden. In Monaco hadden we op zondag onze handen vol aan de auto."

"We zijn niet in paniek, maar het is wel duidelijk dat dit niet te lang zo door kan gaan. Elke slechte race van ons schenkt Ferrari een grotere voorsprong in het kampioenschap. We moeten aan de slag met de auto en de set-up, want op motorisch vlak is het verschil tussen Ferrari en Mercedes op dit moment te verwaarlozen."

Mercedes-motorsportbaas Toto Wolff tot slot: "Eerst gaan we aan de slag met de set-up. Daarna komen we met nieuwe aerodynamische onderdelen om de balans van de wagen te optimaliseren. We zullen onszelf ook afvragen of we iets aan het algehele concept voor de auto moeten veranderen."

Beetje hetzelfde verhaal als bij RBR, alleen zijn de reacties hierop een heel stuk minder. Geen Merc fans hier? Of is de gunfactor anders?

  Ja, als een team drie jaar op rij de wereldtitels wint met twee vingers in hun neus is het vrij normaal dat je weleens een ander aan de top wilt zien eindigen.
  Van mij mag Hamiliton dit jaar minstens zoveel tegenslag hebben als de Red Bulls en Ferrari's de afgelopen jaren hebben gehad.
  Zou wat zijn als Vettel z'n vijfde wereldtitel kan behalen in een Ferrari.. wat een comeback zou dat zijn voor de Scuderia!
