Pirelli: "Vettel niet geprofiteerd van bandentests"

Bandenleverancier Pirelli spreekt tegen dat Sebastian Vettel profijt heeft gehad van het feit dat hij vorig jaar meer dan tweeduizend kilometer heeft getest met prototypes van de banden voor dit seizoen. Paul Hembery gelooft niet dat de problemen die Mercedes met het rubber heeft te herleiden zijn naar de magere inzetbaarheid van Lewis Hamilton voor de bandentests van vorig jaar.

Hembery deelde aan Formula1.com mede: "Ja, Sebastian heeft in 2016 veel voor ons getest. Het was intens en hij voorzag ons van een boel feedback. Daar zijn we hem dankbaar voor. Dat was waar we op hoopten, een topcoureur die ons goede feedback zou geven. Maar hij wist niet precies wat hij testte, het waren 'blinde tests'. Het heeft hem dus misschien psychologisch geholpen, maar ik betwijfel of hij er praktisch gezien van geprofiteerd heeft. Hij had geen voorkennis over de banden."

Ferrari sprong tot nu toe zuiniger met de banden om dan Mercedes, maar Hembery is ervan overtuigd dat de regerend kampioen die problemen te boven zal komen. "De situatie van Mercedes is op dit moment afhankelijk van het circuit. Op Barcelona hadden ze nergens last van en dat zal op Silverstone en Spa ook zo zijn. Het is op de banen die weinig grip bieden dat ze meer problemen hebben, maar ik weet zeker dat ze dat naarmate het seizoen vordert nog zullen verbeteren."

Zodra je wel weet welke band je rijdt, kun je herleiden welke "blinde" banden je gereden hebt en weet je dus ineens heel veel over het slijtpatroon van die banden.

Echt blind bestaat niet, dus het was een goede investering van Vettel en Ferrari.

  Daarnaast is Pirelli blij met de feedback van Vettel en hebben ze die dus gebruikt bij de ontwikkeling. Dus zelfs als Vettel niet zou weten welke banden hij kreeg, dan nog zijn die banden verbetert op de punten die Vettel aan geeft. Ze zullen dus allicht beter bij zijn geliefde rijstijl passen.
