Force India niet bang voor McLaren als concurrent

Het team van Force India heeft geen angst voor McLaren, ook niet als de Britse renstal zich eveneens bij het klantenportfolio van Mercedes voegt. De Duitse autofabrikant voorziet momenteel naast het eigen fabrieksteam ook Force India en Williams van motoren. De geruchten gaan nu dat McLaren voor 2018 bij Mercedes heeft aangeklopt voor krachtbronnen.

De in Woking gevestigde equipe is het aanmodderen met Honda beu en wil weer competitief zijn. McLaren en Mercedes zijn geen vreemden van elkaar; Mercedes was van 1995 tot en met 2014 al motorleverancier van McLaren. Force India is er niet bang voor dat de eventuele komst van McLaren als Mercedes-klant consequenties zal hebben voor de eigen relatie met Mercedes.

Op de vraag van Motorsport-Total.com of de kans op een hereniging tussen McLaren en Mercedes Force India zorgen baart, antwoordde Force India-directeur Otmar Szafnauer resoluut: "Nee. Ik maak me daar geen zorgen over, we hebben het niet in eigen hand. Wat gebeurt, dat gebeurt. Wij concentreren ons liever op dingen die we wel kunnen beïnvloeden."

"We moeten er gewoon voor zorgen dat we goed presteren. We zijn niet bang. De laatste keer dat McLaren en wij over dezelfde motoren beschikten, versloegen ze ons ook maar nipt." In 2014 reden McLaren en Force India met Mercedes-krachtbronnen. McLaren eindigde als vijfde met 181 punten. Force India scoorde 26 punten minder en legde beslag op de zesde plaats.

Daarnaast moet ik nog maar zien of McLaren in 1x voor FI staat als ze dezelfde motor hebben. Jaar op jaar blijft FI mij verbazen door met een beperkt budget telkens de vierde of vijfde plek op te eisen, vaak voor Williams welke ik traditiegetrouw altijd wat beter inschatte.

  Bovendien hebben bange teams niets in de F1 te zoeken, zeker niet op langere termijn.

Tuurlijk zijn ze er niet bang voor. Zodra McLaren een Mercedes motor heeft zullen ze er altijd achter rijden. Geen sprake van concurrentie.
