Billy Monger hoopt in 2020 op Le Mans te rijden

De jonge Britse coureur Billy Monger maakte eerder dit jaar een vreselijk ongeluk mee in een Formule 4-race op Brands Hatch. De inmiddels 18-jarige Monger reed vol in de achterkant van een stilgevallen concurrent en verloor beide onderbenen. Monger is nog steeds herstellende en neemt in november weer plaats achter het stuur van een racewagen.

Monger is inmiddels aangehaakt bij een project van Frederic Sausset, die zelf na vier amputaties deel nam aan de 24 uur van Le Mans. Monger test in het november voor het eerst met een LMP2-auto van Ligier in het Portugese Estoril.

Wanneer de test succesvol verloopt rijdt Monger in 2018 in een lagere klasse voor LMP2-auto's, om in 2019 door te stromen naar de Europese Le Mans Series. In 2020 moet dan de deelname in de 24 uur van Le Mans volgen.
