Grote kans op grid penalty voor Vandoorne in Bakoe

McLaren-coureur Fernando Alonso gaf eerder deze week al aan dat de kans groot is dat hij na de kwalificatie voor de Azerbeidzjaanse Grand Prix teruggezet zal worden op de startgrid. De Spanjaard anticipeert een grid penalty vanwege een motorwissel voor Bakoe.

Honda heeft namelijk een upgrade gereed voor dit weekend. Dat betekent automatisch dat ook Alonso's teamgenoot Stoffel Vandoorne een straf kan verwachten. De Belg: "Waarschijnlijk krijg ik ook een grid penalty en strijden Fernando en ik om wie er zondag als laatste moet starten."

Tegenover Sky zegt hij over de moeizame samenwerking met Honda: "Als McLaren zijnde staat het belang van McLaren bij ons voorop. We moeten knokken, maar het team gaat de goede kant op en hopelijk zullen we op een gegeven moment weer competitief zijn. Hoe eerder, hoe beter."

Vandoorne en Alonso krijgen voor Azerbeidzjan een nieuwe MGU-H gemonteerd, meldt de BBC. Daardoor kunnen beiden vijftien plaatsen straf tegemoet zien. Alonso krijgt ook een nieuwe verbrandingsmotor, zijn vierde exemplaar van dit seizoen.
