Bakoe wil in 2019 Grand Prix weer in juni organiseren

De organisatie van de Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan heeft Liberty Media gevraagd de race van 2019 een plekje op de kalender in juni te geven. De Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan vindt volgend jaar al in april plaats in verband met een nationale feestdag in juni volgend jaar.

Azerbeidzjan viert volgend jaar dat het als land honderd jaar bestaat. In de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw was het een sattelietstaat van de Sovjet-Unie, sinds 1990 is het land weer onafhankelijk. Het feest om het 100-jarig bestaan te vieren vindt plaats op op het stadsplein, waar normaliter de paddock van de Formule 1 staat. De promotor van de race in Bakoe, Arif Rahimov, wil dat de race in 2019 weer in juni plaats vindt.

"We hebben gevraagd voor een race in april 2018. Sochi wordt verplaatst naar september vanwege het WK-voetbal in Rusland. Ons stadsplein wordt volgend jaar in juni gebruikt voor de festiviteiten ter ere van het 100-jarig bestaan van onze republiek. Een race in juli 2018 zal niet gaan passen, aangezien de Formule 1 dan midden in de drukste periode van het seizoen zit. Voor 2019 zou het fijn om terug te gaan naar juni, dat bevalt ons goed", aldus Rahimov.

Rahimov laat verder weten dat een permanente plek in april op de kalender niet gunstig is vanwege het weer. De zomers in Azerbeidzjan zijn droog en heet, maar de winters kunnen lang duren: "Volgend jaar is de race op 29 april. Het zou dan best nog wel eens koud kunnen zijn. Temperaturen van een graad of 15 zijn dan geen uitzondering en het is voor de fans niet fijn om dik aangekleed op de tribunes te moeten zitten."

  Het was door de chaos veroorzaakt door de coureurs zelf een fantastische race maar heeft helemaal niets met deze baan te maken. Ik gun dit soort dictators geen gp. En er is nauwelijks publiek. Geef mij maar Sepang. En Silverstone moet blijven etc etc

  Je moet de race inderdaad van het circuit onderscheiden. Een opwindende race kan overal plaatsvinden en het omgekeerde ook. Dus strepen we dat weg, dan blijft over een draak van een circuit. Driekwart ziet eruit als een half afgemaakte tunnel van hekwerk.
  Hoe vaak er ook op zal worden gereden, het "We're only in for the money" gevoel zal het nooit kwijtraken.

  @Caramba, niet eens. De opwinding afgelopen race in Baku had weldegelijk te maken met de lay-out van het circuit, geen vliegvelden als uitloop stroken, een bizar lang recht stuk en de muren direct langs de baan. Zonder regen of op gewone circuits heb je niet snel dergelijke races.

  En de optocht van vorig jaar. Had dat ook met de lay out te maken? Als men op Monaco ook alle risico neemt is het ook geweldig met absurde situaties. Maar het is ook een baan van niks. Het is alleen de allure en de historie die het mooi maken. Baku heeft dat ook niet eens. Nee ze kunnen leukere plekken verzinnen dan dit.

  Een groot aantal van deze baancommissarissen doen de wereld rond meerdere GP's. Deze komen hoofdzakelijk uit Bahrein en Abu Dhabi. Zijn zelfs pro's bij! Dus het is niet zo dat er wat lokale mensen uit Azerbeidzjan worden ingezet en zoek het maar uit. Daarbij zijn rechte stukken lang in vergelijking met Monaco en maakt het lastiger met een kraan ergens bij te komen.
  2x live daar bij de GP geweest en onder de indruk wat daar is neergezet als nieuwe GP.

Mooi circuit, fraaie stad, hoge snelheden dwars door een stad is uniek op de kalender.
Nog 3 edities (5 totaal) en dan mogen ze van mij wel elders naar toe gaan. Ik hou van variatie in circuits en Baku onderscheidt zich weldegelijk.

  Eens. Variatie is top. Vooral prima om ergens een paar jaar te racen en dan weer verder te trekken. Wilde Liberty niet weer de oude circuits erbij halen? Vind ik namelijk een goed plan, maar nieuwe circuits kunnen ook erg leuk zijn. Alleen Tilke niet de vrije hand geven, dan komt het wel goed denk ik.

Vorig jaar jaar was de GP2 de smaakmaker en was de F1 mega saai. Dit jaar was de F1 een race met veel chaos en dat maakt het tot een mooie race met vanalles wat. Ik hoop ergens komend jaar weer zo een race met vanalles wat te zien.
