Stewart: "De Formule 1 kan niet zonder Britse GP"

Dat Silverstone waarschijnlijk gebruik gaat maken van de ontsnappingsclausule in het contract met de Formule 1 is wat oud-coureur Jackie Stewart betreft een doemscenario. Door de clausule te activeren is de toekomst van de Britse Grand Prix na 2019 onzeker. Deze race mag niet van de kalender vallen, betoogt Stewart. De Formule 1 en Groot-Brittannië hebben elkaar nodig.

Stewart verkondigde in The Grand Prix Show op talkSPORT 2: "De Britse Grand Prix moet overleven, ook voor de Formule 1. Groot-Brittannië is de bakermat van de autosport. Volgens mijn informatie, gevoed door de autoriteiten, zijn in Groot-Brittannië 143.000 mensen werkzaam in de autosportindustrie. Dat betekent dat er een hoogwaardig laboratorium voor waardevolle technologie is, aangezien 80 procent van de kennis en producten ook wordt geëxporteerd."

"Veel andere sporten kunnen putten uit subsidies om medailles te winnen. De Britse Grand Prix heeft nooit op steun van de diverse overheden, zowel lokaal als nationaal, hoeven rekenen. Nu er een verschil is tussen wat Liberty Media bereid is te bieden en wat de BRDC en Silverstone bereid zijn te betalen is de tijd rijp voor overheidssteun. Andere sporten hebben een veel minder krachtige en minder lucratieve industrie achter zich dan de autosport."

"De zilverpijlen van het Formule 1-team van Mercedes worden niet voor niets niet in Stuttgart gebouwd. De fabriek van de renstal staat in Brackley en het is een op en top Britse organisatie. Daar profiteert Mercedes op globale basis van. Er zijn heel veel mensen van de autosport afhankelijk. We mogen de Britse Grand Prix absoluut niet verliezen. Ik heb er hard voor gevochten en Bernie Ecclestone heeft ook concessies gedaan om de race te behouden."

Laat dat racen in grote steden maar aan de FE over, ik zie de F1 het liefst zo veel mogelijk racen op een traditioneel circuit zoals Silverstone.

      Precies, alsjeblieft geen stratenraces er meer bij.
      Vermoed dat het uiteindelijk ook wel goed komt met Silverstone.

    Zijn betoog gaat meer over dat Groot Brittannië niet zonder de F1 kan dan andersom.
    Voorlopig is het nog geen 2019 en is er nog tijd om te praten. Plus dat er potentieel nog rijke particulieren op kunnen staan om wat geld er tegenaan te gooien in ruil voor leuke promotie en extraatjes.
    Met andere woorden, er zijn nog genoeg opties om de boel te redden i.p.v. nu al te gaan doemdenken.

      Op zich komen er van oudsher veel teams vandaan. Maar Frankrijk, Italië en Duitsland zijn net zo goed bakermat van de autosport. Raar ook dat er zo lang geen Franse GP is geweest.

      Het hele argument om Silverstone te behouden omdat in Engeland de meeste teams zijn gevestigd is niet meer actueel.

      Dat was het nog wel toen er onbeperkt getest mocht worden en dan was het handig om als team in de buurt van een circuit te zitten.

      Valt de GP van Engeland nu weg verandert er wat dat betreft dus niets voor de teams.

      Dat gezegd hebbende is het m.i. te hopen dat de GP op Silverstone behouden kan blijven en dat gaat vast ook gebeuren.

    De F1 kan idd effectief ook niet zonder een Britse GP, de UK is de bakermat vd autosport, op Sauber & Ferrari nu zitten alle teams daar (ook Renault & Mercedes) en veruit de meeste kenners zijn Britten, daar wegtrekken kan gewoon niet
    Landen als Groot Brittanië, Italië, Frankrijk, Duitsland en België horen enkel voor hun historische waarde al automatisch altijd op de kalender te staan

      Ze kunnen prima zonder de historische GP landen.... echter..... F1 is voor mij meer dan de waan van dag spektakel, een rijke historie hoort er voor mij bij, met iconische races en helden. Om die reden 100% mee een Kuro!

      Vier van de tien teams, waaronder één van de succesvolste, zijn niet in Engeland gevestigd, da's toch 40%.

      De rentabiliteit van de races, inmiddels mondiaal een miljarden industrie, heeft weinig aan een bakermat of mooie historie.
      En een mooie historie hebben bv Zandvoort en Kyalami ook.
      De tijd gaat verder....

      Met het verschil dat vrijwel alle teams gevestigd zijn in Engeland of er op zijn minst een deel van het team hebben zitten. Groot Brittanie speelt een hele grote rol in de historie van de autosport.

    Stewart hou op met je gemekker om overheidsgeld. F1 is een afgrijselijke elitesport waarin geld doelbewust tegen de verkeerde wanden opklotst. Laat het circus zijn eigen problemen maar oplossen.
    Ik zou 't een stuk chiquer vinden als ie erop wijst dat het circus en bepaalde circuits een gemeenschappelijk belang hebben. F1 heeft gewoon circuits nodig waar de fans zich bevinden. Als je die stuk voor stuk afschiet zal de fanbase nog verder inkrimpen. F1 moet niet alleen leren haar eigen broek op te houden maar ook meer op lange termijn te denken.

    Ik weet eerlijk gezegd niet of ik een Britse Grand prix zou missen. Als er een mooi circuit voor terugkomt zou het geen gemis zijn, maar voor teams en de Britse fans is het meer een gemis.
