'FIA stoomt Mekies klaar als opvolger voor Whiting'

Er circuleren weer verhalen dat Charlie Whiting na dit jaar stopt met zijn werkzaamheden als wedstrijdleider van de internationale autosportbond FIA. Die geruchten deden eerder de ronde, maar toen waren de betrokken partijen er als de kippen bij om het te ontkennen.

Nu keert het gespeculeer rondom de positie van Whiting terug door een verhaal van Marca. "Alles wijst erop dat de Franse engineer Laurent Mekies, die sinds zijn vertrek bij Scuderia Toro Rosso voor de FIA werkt, klaargestoomd wordt om Whiting op te volgen."

"Mekies zou zijn nieuwe rol volgend seizoen al kunnen gaan bekleden. Als Whiting weg is, blijft er bijna niemand uit het Bernie Ecclestone-tijdperk op een sleutelpositie over", schrijft Jose Maria Rubio. Eerder vertrokken Herbie Blash en Pasquala Lattuneddu al bij de FIA.
