Mallya: "Elk schot moet in de roos zijn bij Force India"

Het team van Force India behaalde vorig jaar een historische vierde plek in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs. De Indiase renstal is hard op weg om die prestatie dit seizoen te herhalen. Force India is achter Mercedes, Ferrari en Red Bull Racing beste van de rest. Ontzettend knap, helemaal aangezien het team over minder middelen beschikt dan veel van de andere renstallen.

Daardoor moet Force India heel zorgvuldig met het beschikbare geld omspringen en daar slagen ze wonderwel in. Teambaas Vijay Mallya: "Als leider moet je scherpe en ambitieuze doelstellingen formuleren. Vandaar dat ik voor het seizoen over een top drie-klassering sprak. En we staan niet eens zo heel ver weg, in sommige races moet Red Bull Racing over de schouders naar achteren kijken."

"Onze opponenten in de top drie hebben echter zoveel geld en zoveel middelen tot hun beschikking, zij zijn bijna onmogelijk om te verslaan. Zij kunnen bij de ontwikkeling van hun auto's van alles uit proberen en dan zit er altijd wel iets tussen wat een voltreffer blijkt te zijn. Bij Force India moet elk schot in de roos zijn. Wij investeren in rondetijd en prestaties, in niets anders."

Kortom, Force India steekt al het geld in de auto. Het extra prijzengeld na de vierde plaats in 2016 is zodoende ook in de ontwikkeling van de VJM10 verdwenen. Engineer Tom McCullough: "We hebben dit seizoen elke race iets nieuws voor de wagen gehad." Technisch directeur Andy Green voegt toe: "En vaak zorgden de kleine updates voor meer tijdwinst dan de grote pakketten."

In Silverstone introduceerde Force India een nieuwe voorvleugels en andere barge boards. Komend weekend in Hongarije volgt opnieuw een kleine update. De eerstvolgende grote upgrade volgt in september. Green vertelde aan Auto Motor und Sport: "De volgende grote stap staat voor de Grand Prix van Singapore in de planning. Daar hebben we een volledig nieuwe bodemplaat voor de VJM10."

Doen ze niet slecht en dat al sinds jaren. Die Andy Green zou een waardig opvolger van Adrian Newey kunnen zijn als die weer meer wil gaan zeilen.

  Hebben ze bij Williams nog geluk dat Toro Rosso nogal wat brokken maakt... Als ze niet uit kijken zien ze Toro Rosso, Haas en Renault nog langskomen ook, want Williams zakt de laatste races toch steeds verder weg

  Inderdaad, VJM verkiest een goed talent boven een coureur met veel sponsor geld. Ben blij dat dat goed uitpakt voor hen en dat ze door de goede prestaties meer geld binnen harken dan slecht coureur met veel sponsorgeld.
