Vasseur: "We hopen voor de zomerstop een deal voor motoren te hebben"

Gisteren werd bekend dat Sauber de eerder gesloten deal met motorleverancier Honda om 'strategische redenen' heeft laten ontbinden. De Zwitserse renstal maakte in april nog vol trots bekend volgend jaar in zee te gaan met het Japanse merk, maar na het vertrek van teambaas Monisha Kaltenborn doken al snel geruchten op dat Sauber en Honda de deal zouden verbreken.

Voor Sauber begint nu de zoektocht naar een nieuwe partner voor de motoren. Lang hoeft teambaas Frederic Vasseur waarschijnlijk niet te zoeken: de kans is groot dat Sauber en Ferrari ook volgend jaar partners zullen zijn. Sauber werkte eerder al samen met Ferrari in de periode 1997 tot en met 2005 en sinds 2010 zijn de Italianen weer verbonden aan de Zwitserse renstal nadat BMW het team terug verkocht aan oprichter Peter Sauber.

Dit jaar rijdt Sauber met de 2016-specificatie van de Ferrari-motor, iets wat in 2018 absoluut geen optie is volgens Vasseur: "We hopen dat we snel iets bekend kunnen maken, aangezien ons ontwerpteam al in een vergevorderd stadium is met de nieuwe auto. Om die te kunnen bouwen hebben we wel duidelijkheid over de motor nodig. Het is voor ons in 2018 geen optie om met oude motoren te rijden, we willen absoluut de nieuwste specificatie."
