Liberty verkent mogelijkheden voor race in Vietnam

Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media wil een Grand Prix in de Vietnamese stad Ho Chi Minh City organiseren. Dat bericht brengt The Sun. Een afvaardiging van het mediabedrijf is recent naar Vietnam afgereisd om de mogelijkheden voor een race in Ho Chi Minh City te verkennen.

Liberty Media beschouwt Vietnam als mogelijk alternatief voor Maleisië, dat na dit seizoen van de Formule 1-kalender verdwijnt. De onderhandelingen bevinden zich nog in een pril stadium, maar sponsor Heineken heeft eerder al laten weten een Grand Prix in Vietnam zeker te zien zitten.

Voormalig Formule 1-baas Bernie Ecclestone hield de boot wat Vietnam betreft juist af. Hij zei vorig jaar april: "Ik had in augustus 2015 een overeenkomst kunnen tekenen met Vietnam. Maar dat land heeft totaal geen autosportgeschiedenis. Ik was bekritiseerd voor andere Grands Prix in landen die weinig racehistorie hadden, zoals Azerbeidzjan en Rusland. Bovendien wilde ik niet een extra race in een regio waar we al met enkele zeer goede promotors samenwerkten."

    Ik zou als Liberty eerder alles op alles zetten om Maleisië te behouden, dat is altijd een mooie race geweest.

    Ga dan bij DA Nang racen in het midden van het land, is minder heet en vochtig dan Saigon. Mooiere omgeving ook.

    Kan me eigenlijk niet heel veel schelen waar ze racen, als het circuit maar spectaculair is en inhalen mogelijk is. Tuurlijk wil je de klassiekers behouden, en wil je een beetje spreiding wat betreft de GPs. In dat opzicht mogen ze van mij wel naar zuid-afrika gaan. Maar bv Circuit of the Americas vind ik prima. Die heeft een aantal interessante bochten waar verschillende lijnen gereden kunnen worden en inhalen bevorderd.

    Vietnam? Wtf man. Vanuit een amerikaanse bril begrijp ik dat maar als F1-fan zie ik daar geen meerwaarde in. Wie herinnert zich nog de gp van korea of van india nog....allemaal nikszeggende circuits zonder historie....
