Volgt de Formule 1 de MotoGP binnenkort naar Finland?

De MotoGP organiseert vanaf 2019 jaarlijks een race in Finland. Momenteel wordt met man en macht gebouwd aan een nieuw circuit 110 kilometer ten noordoosten van Helsinki, genaamd de KymiRing. Oorspronkelijk was het de bedoeling dat de MotoGP daar in 2018 al naartoe zou gaan, maar dat is met een jaar uitgesteld. In 2019 komt het er echt van.

De vraag is of een Finse Grand Prix ook iets voor de Formule 1 kan zijn. De KymiRing beschikt in elk geval over de benodigde Grade 1-licentie van de internationale autosportbond FIA. De baan wordt 4,6 kilometer lang en krijgt 18 bochten, eerlijk verdeeld over bochten naar links en bochten naar rechts. Het circuit komt in een glooiende omgeving, met een hoogteverschil van achttien meter.

In eerste instantie beschouwde men de komst van een Grand Prix niet als een realistisch doel vanwege de enorme hoeveelheid geld die daarmee gemoeid is, maar daar is de afgelopen maanden toch een schifting in gekomen. Bij de Finse autosportbond zien ze het wel zitten. Voorzitter Juhan Pakari: "Het is logisch dat we de mogelijkheid om de Formule 1 naar Finland te halen serieus zullen bestuderen."

Finland heeft een rijke geschiedenis wat betreft Formule 1-coureurs en bracht wereldkampioenen voort als Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen en Kimi Raikkonen. Valtteri Bottas probeert zich ook in dat rijtje te scharen. Het land was nog nooit gastheer van een Grand Prix.

  ach die muggen vallen best mee. Ik heb een paar jaar geleden snachts aan het meer van Inari gestaan tussen de muggen, en geen enkele keer gestoken.
  Al meot ik wel zeggen dat er muggen bij zaten die meer formaat vlinder dan mug hadden... Schrok me dood de eerste keer dat ik zo'n ding zag :)
