Wilhelmus voor Amerikaan Verhagen na winst in Assen

Formule Renault 2.0 Eurocup-coureur Neil Verhagen maakte dit weekend een uitstapje naar de Formule Renault 2.0 NEC, samen met teamgenoten Richard Verschoor en Jarno Opmeer. Het MP Motorsport-trio vulde het startveld aan voor de Gamma Racing Days op het TT-circuit van Assen.

Verhagen schreef de eerste race van het weekend op zijn naam. De 16-jarige Amerikaan kreeg echter niet het Amerikaanse volkslied te horen, maar het Wilhelmus. Een foutje van de organisatie. De verwarring is wel te begrijpen, gezien zijn Nederlands klinkende achternaam. Verhagen vertelde aan De Telegraaf: "Mijn opa komt uit Nederland, maar ik ben geboren en getogen in de Verenigde Staten."

Samen met Verschoor behoort hij tot de opleiding van Red Bull. "Ik zat in de wiskundeles toen ik werd gebeld, maar ik kon de telefoon in de klas niet opnemen. Ik zag wel dat een voicemail met landencode Oostenrijk was ingesproken en dat maakte mij heel nieuwsgierig. Ik ging naar het toilet om de voicemail te beluisteren en vervolgens belde ik mijn vader om mij van school te halen zodat ik thuis op mijn gemak terug kon bellen. Ik was helemaal opgewonden toen ik meneer Marko aan de lijn kreeg", aldus Verhagen over het moment dat hij hoorde dat Red Bull hem opnam in de opleiding.

Overigens was het weekend in de Formule Renault 2.0 NEC goed voor het moraal en vertrouwen van de MP Motorsport-coureurs. In de Eurocup wil het allemaal nog niet erg vlotten dit seizoen. Verhagen: "We missen nog de snelheid ten opzichte van de concurrentie." In Assen hadden ze daar even geen last van. De tweede race viel ten prooi aan Verschoor, terwijl ook Opmeer op het podium belandde.

Zonder safety car had Verschoor niet gewonnen en was Opmeer ook geen derde geworden.

  Die andere landen duren me veel te lang.
  
  En vooral dat Italiaanse getrut waar de coureurs en monteurs vrolijk op gaan doen zonder respect imo.
