De Grand Prix van België 2001 zal bij veel Formule 1-fans nog wel herinneringen oproepen. Michael Schumacher evenaarde het aantal zeges van Alain Prost nadat hij een race daarvoor al zijn vierde wereldtitel had behaald. De zware crash van Luciano Burti wierp echter een schaduw over de historische mijlpaal van Schumacher.

Burti kwam in de openingsfase achter de Jaguar van Eddie Irvine te rijden. De Braziliaan probeerde aan de binnenkant van Blanchimont om Irvine in te halen, maar de Prost-coureur raakt de Jaguar van Irvine. Burti verloor zijn voorvleugel en schoot met hoge snelheid van de baan om onder de bandenstapels tot stilstand te komen.

Irvine kon meteen uitstappen en hielp de marshalls met het bevrijden van Burti uit zijn benarde positie. De Formule 1-wereld hield even haar adem in, maar Burti kwam er redelijk vanaf. De Braziliaan kon de rest van het seizoen niet meer in actie komen en verloor de hoop op een toekomst in de Formule 1 toen zijn werkgever Prost failliet ging in de winter van 2002.
