Nicholas Latifi: "Formule 2 prestaties bepalen of ik stoeltje in Formule 1 krijg"

Formule 2-coureur Nicholas Latifi hoopt dat hij dit jaar goed genoeg kan presteren om komend seizoen in aanmerking te komen voor een Formule 1-stoeltje bij het team van Renault.

Latifi reed tijdens de tests in Hongarije op de eerste dag in de R.S.17 van Renault. Maar dat werd publicitair technisch helemaal ondergesneeuwd door Robert Kubica die een dag later in de Renault stapte. Als Jolyon Palmer volgend jaar niet voor Renault rijdt dan lijkt Kubica dat stoeltje over te gaan nemen, maar Latifi geeft het nog niet op.

De 22-jarige Canadees tegen GPUpdate: "Eerlijk gezegd ben ik er niet echt mee bezig wat er volgend jaar gaat gebeuren. Er zijn nog acht races in de Formule 2. Hoe ik daar presteer zal de belangrijkste factor zijn of ik promoveer naar een Formule 1-stoeltje."

Kubica zette tijdens de tests op de Hungaroring een aanmerkelijk snellere tijd neer dan Latifi: 1:18572 vs 1:20.302. Maar door technische problemen kwam Latifi niet verder dan 54 ronden tegenover de 142 van Kubica. "Maar Formule 1-coureur betekent meer dan een snelle rondetijd neerzetten. Het gaat ook over feedback en of je een programma kan rijden", aldus Latifi.

Maar behalve Kubica zal ook reserve-coureur Sergei Sirotkin op de lijst staan om Palmer eventueel te vervangen. En volgens teambaas Cyril Abiteboul kan Palmer eventueel blijven als hij een goede tweede seizoenshelft rijdt. Tel daar de geruchten van de afgelopen maanden op van Fernando Alonso en Carlos Sainz en de terughoudendheid van Latifi is begrijpelijk.

  Dat verteld Renault hem. Aangezien wij alleen kunnen kijken naar de twee seconden. Maar Renault daarentegen kan ronden vergelijken aan de hand van banden, kilo brandstof, engine mode en de opdracht. Vrij kortzichtige reactie

  Het klopt dat enkel het team een hoed oordeel kan vellen. Echter mede op basis van zijn prestaties in heden en verleden geef ik hem weinig kans op een F1 zitje. Net zoals men Palmer een wordt voorhoud dat hij nog een kans maakt voor komend seizoen. Dat doen ze alleen om die jongen een beetje gemotiveerd en uitgedaagt te houden. Komend seizoen zitten er 2 'knappe' en ervaren coureurs in die Renaults. Nico mag blijven en hij krijgt versterking van een ervaren coureur zoals Alonso, Sainz of Kubica. Voor minder gaan ze het echt niet doen bij Renault. Komend seizoen moet er écht gescoord gaan worden en is er geen plek voor prutsende rookies of b-coureurs. Een plan-c voor Renault kan Kvyat nog zijn, maar zelfs dat geloof ik niet...

Ze willen allemaal in de F1 rijden, Cyril Abiteboul zei dat Palmer in 2018 kan rijden, dan zal hij wel zijn best moeten doen. Voor de rest zijn het alleen maar wilde verhalen waar niemand iets mee kan.

Momenteel staat de telefoon roodgloeiend bij Renault ... allemaal rijders die denken kans te maken op het stoeltje bij Renault...

Ik denk dat Renault al lang een beeld heeft welke rijders er echt op een lijstje komt. En Latifi zal daar echt niet op staan.

omhoog geraakt op de ladder een flinke zak geld, is niet goed genoeg voor F1, is mij zelf een raadsel hoe hij in deftig team als Dams is geraakt.
