McLaren lanceert 'plannen' voor Grand Prix in Woking

McLaren heeft een opmerkelijk bericht naar buiten gebracht. De Britse renstal heeft namelijk plannen gelanceerd voor een Grand Prix in de straten van Woking, de stad waarin de fabriek van het team gevestigd is. Het is geen 1 april, maar toch is het de vraag hoe serieus dit te nemen valt. McLaren heeft in elk geval al een 4,85 kilometer lang circuit uitgestippeld voor de Woking Grand Prix.

Zelf omschrijft het team het als absurd ambitieuze plannen. Ook laat McLaren weten dat het de plannen nog niet officieel gepresenteerd heeft aan de gemeenteraad van Woking, omdat ze bang zouden zijn over hoe de gemeente op de benodigde investeringen in infrastructuur zou reageren. Dat duidt op een grap om de zomerpauze op te fleuren, maar met een serieus karakter.

McLaren-directeur Jonathan Neale: "Waarom niet? Waarom zouden we de Formule 1 niet naar de straten van Woking brengen? Afgezien van de enorme sociale en financiële toewijding die nodig zijn om de infrastructuur op te zetten, de straten opnieuw te asfalteren, tribunes te bouwen, de fee voor een Grand Prix te betalen en goedkeuring van de FIA te krijgen, zien we geen obstakels. In een tijdperk waarin bureaucratie en bekrompenheid de boventoon voeren is dat een verfrissende benadering."

Zijn collega Zak Brown vult aan: "Mika Hakkinen racete voor het eerst met een Formule 1-auto van McLaren door de straten van Woking, in 1998. En als ik zeg racete, dan bedoel ik dat hij langzaam door de stad reed. Dat was een beproeving voor Mika, want hij reed nooit langzaam. Dat evenement zorgde voor een vonkje en daardoor is een vuur gaan branden dat we hebben omgezet in een droom dat we nu omzetten in een idee; een ronde in het wereldkampioenschap Formule 1 op de drempel van ons hoofdkwartier, in Woking."

Die laatste bochtencombinatie lijkt verdacht veel op monaco. Verder vrees ik dat het onmogelijk wordt om in te halen op deze baan.

Dat zijn nu juist de belangrijkste obstakels waar elk organiserende stad/land mee te maken krijgt. Moeten we dit nu echt serieus gaan opvatten? Ik denk het niet.

  Voor mij zijn Monaco en Macau de meest mooie, ook al is het vaak een bloemencorso..;)

Als je het filmpje bekijkt op de twitter pagina van McLaren kan ik niet anders concluderen dat het om een grap gaat - teveel 'twinkle' in de ogen :D __ Goeie humor daar bij de Britten. ;) Ziet er anders niet verkeerd uit! Van mij mag ie!!
