Hamilton aan de vooravond van zijn 200ste Grand Prix

Mercedes-coureur Lewis Hamilton bereikt bij de Grand Prix van België een mijlpaal. De Brit rijdt op Spa-Francorchamps zijn 200ste Formule 1-race. Van de voorgaande 199 starts in de koningsklasse van de autosport wist hij er 57 winnend af te sluiten. In 2008, 2014 en 2015 veroverde hij de wereldtitel.

Hamilton kan zijn jubileum extra glans geven door zaterdag de pole position te pakken. Dan komt hij namelijk op gelijke hoogte met recordhouder Michael Schumacher, die 68 pole positions achter zijn naam heeft staan. Spa-Francorchamps is Hamilton door de jaren heen nooit heel erg gunstig gezind geweest. De Mercedes-coureur wist twee keer te winnen in de Belgische Ardennen.

De Grand Prix van zondag is tevens de 50ste officiële Formule 1-race op het circuit van Spa-Francorchamps. De wedstrijd zal zich voltrekken voor veel publiek. De Grand Prix van België is voor het eerst sinds tijden uitverkocht.

    Vanaf race 1 (2007) sensationeel en pakte toen meteen iets van 8 podiumplekken inclusief 2 overwinningen achter elkaar, wat een debuut man, en dat naast Alonso als teamgenoot.
    In 2009 was de McLaren bagger, maar ook toen liet hij er hele mooie dingen mee zien (in Melbourne meteen van achteraan naar P3 volgens mij alleen DQ vanwege lie-gate).

    Maakte op het perfecte moment de overstap naar Mercedes. McLaren kwakkelde toen verder weg en Mercedes deed het in 2013 al best aardig.

    Hamilton is één van de grootste ooit, in mijn ogen een tikkeltje beter dan Vettel. Ik hoop dat we nog een aantal jaar van Hamilton mogen genieten!

      Damon Hill ; ik vind Lewis velen malen beter als Vettel. Maar misschien is dat ook wel omdat Lewis wat minder aan het janken is via de boordradio.

      Een van de grootsten ooit zeker, beter dan Vettel? Mwah, ik weet niet...
      Vettel heeft natuurlijk zijn jaren bij Red Bull gehad met veelal een erg goede auto, maar de auto van Hamilton was de afgelopen jaren in verhouding nog veel beter dan de rest van het veld.

      Ik vind het lastig vergelijken, maar schat Vettel een tikkeltje hoger in.

      De 2009 McLaren was in het begin bagger. Implementatie van de KERS-accu was een groot probleem voor iedereen die er mee reed. McLaren bleef erin geloven en kreeg het voor elkaar. Lewis had de meeste punten van iedereen in de 2e seizoenshelft.

      De overwinning in Hongarije staat te boek als de 1e KERS overwinning ooit. Lewis: "I got a good exit on turn 1 and I kersed my way past Webber." Met de overwinning van Kimi daarna in Spa (KERS kemmelstraight op Fisi na de herstart) was het voor iedere renstal duidelijk dat electropower een must is.

      Barrichello stond in 2009 op Spa te roken in de pits. Brawn: "Rubens, the car is on fire. Make sure you stop at a extinguisher." Race engineer: "Rubens, it's properly on fire like seriously on fire. If you haven't got out yet, I wish you have, then get out fast." Paniek bij de race engineer maar Rubens stapte rustig en nonchalant uit.

      Tja, als je de dvd van seizoen 2009 in de auto had toendertijd en bij elke wachttijd in de auto dat ding opzette....

      @Damon Hill Helemaal waar. Vooral die race in die bagger McLaren van 2009 die twee seconde langzamer was dan de Brawn ergens achteraan beginnen naar P3 drie, ik dat Vettel of Alonso nooit zien doen, dat was puur magisch. Hamilton kon op Nurnbergring ook nog winnen was het door een lekke band waardoor het mis ging.

      Vergelijken is altijd moeilijk, Vettel was bij STR al waanzinnig goed, niet alleen met die overwinning maar ook in Brazilie dat jaar bijvoorbeeld.

      Hamilton heeft echter idioot veel poles achter zn naam staan en daarom vind ik hem net iets sneller dan Vettel, maar dat neemt niet weg dat Vettel een hele grote is!

      @ Damon, het vergelijking is ook zo lastig omdat het 2 totaal andere type coureurs zijn. Voor mij staat het echter buiten kijf dat Hamilton en Vettel beiden hele grote zijn in deze sport. Beiden hebben zeer mooie dingen laten zien in mindere bolides en zijn, zeker wanneer ze in vorm zijn en in een winnende bolide zitten, nagenoeg ongenaakbaar. Al om al vind ik wel dat Hamilton qua pure snelheid net een streepje voor heeft op Vettel. Vettel daarentegen lijkt mij in de race soms weer net wat sneller en/of slimmer. Qua meedogenloosheid doen ze niet voor elkaar onder, al vind ik dat Hamilton zijn acties dan vaak weer net wat meer geslepen en slimmer uitvoert. Daarbij vind ik Hamilton ook weer net wat beter omgaan met (grote) tegenslagen. Vettel blijft dan meestal in een waas van woede hangen, terwijl Hamilton verder vooruit lijkt te kijken en denken (ook al lijkt dat soms wat paniekerig te klinken). Al om al, zou ik Hamilton boven Vettel zetten, maar in alle eerlijkheid komt dat naast de bovenstaande interpretatie ook deels door mijn persoonlijke voorkeur van Hamilton boven Vettel.
