McLaren brengt eerbetoon aan oprichter Bruce McLaren

Het team van McLaren staat vandaag stil bij het feit dat het tachtig jaar geleden is dat Bruce McLaren geboren werd. Bruce McLaren is de oprichter en naamgever van de Britse renstal. De Nieuw-Zeelander kwam op 30 augustus 1937 ter wereld in Auckland en stichtte in 1963 het McLaren Racing Team, waarmee hij vanaf 1966 deel ging nemen aan Grands Prix. Bruce McLaren verongelukte op 2 juni 1970 bij een CanAm-test op Goodwood. Hij werd slechts 32 jaar oud.

    Dit jaar ging het in de maand mei voornamelijk over 'the triple crown'. In 1966 won Bruce McLaren samen met Chris Amon de Le Mans 24-hours race in die befaamde Ford GT40. Als coureur een uitstekend rijder met een geweldig record in de Can-Am series in de 60'er jaren.
    De Triple Crown die als coureur alleen gewonnen is door Graham Hill, maar als constructeur hebben we McLaren dat als race-team de Triple Crown gewonnen heeft. Sinds 1995 mag McLaren zich officieel het enige team ter wereld noemen dat deze prestatie geleverd heeft.
    Terugkijkend naar de geschiedenis begon dat in 1972 met de dubbele Captains Mark Donohue (Captain Nice) en Roger Penske (the Captain) in een door Penske Automotive ingeschreven McLaren Offenhauser gesponsord door Sunoco. McLaren als chassis bouwer herhaalde dit in 1974 en 1976 met hun eigen team Bruce McLaren Motorsport. De voorloper van het huidige McLaren.
    Alain Prost zorgde in 1984 in een legendarische wedstrijd op Monaco voor een volgende stap naar dit unicum. We weten allemaal wat er die dag gebeurde, we weten allemaal dat de wereld daar kennis maakte met de Mister McLaren himself, Ayrton Senna. Grote namen vinden elkaar in de historie als het gaat om overwinningen.
    Statistisch gezien konden we na deze Grand Prix al spreken van een Triple Crown voor McLaren. Als coureur Le Mans gewonnen, en helaas posthum als naam ook nog winnaar van Indianapolis, zowel met zijn Chassis als Team en als Team het winnen van Monaco.
    Maar de echte Triple Crown voor Constructeurs kwam 11 jaar later. In een gedevalueerd sportscar kampioenschap de BPR Global GT Racing (Vroege voorloper Blancpain Series) won Yannick Dalmas (voormalig F1 coureur) JJ Lehto (o.a. Sauber en Benetton) en Masanori Sekiya (eerste Japanner die 1 van de grote 3 races won) de 24 uurs-race in de McLaren F1 GTR aangedreven door een 6.0 litr BMW V12. Na deze race besloot Mr. Bean himself om deze auto aan zijn collectie toe te voegen.
    Hiermee is de Triple Crown voor Constructeurs een feit, mogen wij onze hoed afnemen voor de coureur Bruce McLaren, maar mogen wij zeker zijn legacy naar zijn overlijden waarderen. Daarom doet het hedendaags de dag zo veel pijn aan de ogen om een eens machtig Race-Team te zien sukkelen zonder uitzicht op verbetering. Bruce McLaren zal van boven kijken, nadenken en uiteindelijk tot de conclusie komen dat zijn trotse naam in de autosportwereld alleen teert op het verleden....

      1995 Le Mans, top 5 was 3x McLaren F1 GTR. Dat jaar was er geen LMP1 maar wel LMP2.

      LMP1 is nu op sterven na weer dood. Herhaalt de geschiedenis zich weer? Ik denk het niet met zo'n groot LMP2 veld. Maar mocht er nog wat veranderen in dat veld is het een mooie kans voor Alonso. Wat dat betreft is het verstandig voor hem om op wat voor manier dan ook aan McLaren verbonden te blijven ivm Indycar en evt toekomstige Le Mans deelnames.
