Sauber bouwt een compleet nieuwe auto voor 2018

Het team van Sauber gooit het voor volgend seizoen over een andere boeg. De nieuwe bolide wordt geen doorontwikkeling van de huidige C36, maar een totaal nieuw concept. Dat liet teambaas Frederic Vasseur weten in Italië. "We bouwen een compleet nieuwe auto, we beginnen helemaal opnieuw."

Dat moet ook wel, want Sauber beleeft een moeizaam seizoen. De Zwitserse renstal is uit aan het groeien tot het lelijke eendje van de Formule 1. Coureurs Marcus Ericsson en Pascal Wehrlein zijn meestal veruit de langzaamste rijders van het veld. Dat komt mede door de 2016-specificatie Ferrari-motor.

Ericsson verklaart: "We verliezen meer dan 20 kilometer per uur op de rechte stukken." Voor 2018 verandert het nodige. Sauber krijgt de beschikking over de nieuwste specificatie Ferrari-krachtbron en technisch directeur Jörg Zander zal meer zijn stempel drukken op de bolide. "De huidige auto is niet afkomstig van Jörg", aldus Vasseur.

Toch is het nog lastig om doelstellingen te formuleren voor komend seizoen. Vasseur: "De eerste opgave is om het gat naar de middenmoot te dichten. Dat wordt al moeilijk genoeg. We moeten een grote stap zetten en er zijn geen ingrijpende regelwijzigingen. Wat er verder mogelijk zal zijn is nog lastig te zeggen."
