Force India ontkracht nieuwste overnamegeruchten

Het team van Force India heeft de nieuwste overnamegeruchten naar het rijk der fabelen verwezen. Sportief gezien gaat het de Indiase renstal voor de wind; Force India is hard op weg om de historische vierde plaats van vorig jaar dit seizoen te herhalen. Financieel gaat het minder goed met het team; het verlies van Force India verdubbelde in 2016 naar 12 miljoen pond.

De combinatie van sportief succes en financiële onzekerheid maakt Force India interessant voor investeerders. Daarbij keren steeds twee potentiële overnamekandidaten terug; Lawrence Stroll, de schatrijke vader van Williams-coureur Lance Stroll, en BWT, sinds begin dit jaar sponsor van Force India. Geen van beide partijen heeft bij Force India geïnformeerd naar een overname.

Bob Fernley, vice-teambaas van Force India, liet aan Motorsport-Total.com weten: "Voor zover mij bekend is valt er op dit vlak niets nieuws te vertellen. Met Lawrence Stroll maken we al grappen, want volgens de verhalen zou hij het team al twee keer gekocht hebben. Hij zegt dan dat hij nog dividend van ons tegoed heeft, waarop ik antwoord dat ik op mijn provisie wacht."

BWT is een ander verhaal. Het Oostenrijkse watertechnologiebedrijf investeert veel geld in de autosport. Zo zou de firma 15 tot 20 miljoen dollar aan Force India betalen, terwijl het ook coureurs als Lucas Auer en Maximilian Günther ondersteunt. BWT beschikt echter niet over de middelen om een Formule 1-team over te nemen. Vorig jaar noteerde het bedrijf een bescheiden winst van 10 miljoen euro.

Ik vind het bijzonder hoe dit team zo succesvol blijft. De eigenaren hebben een verre van schoon blazoen, hebben problemen met justitie, het team maakt verlies, de bedrijven van de team eigenaren zijn failliet of daar gaat het allerminst goed mee en toch zijn ze het 4e team op de grid...
