Teams trekken toegevoegde waarde Strategy Group in twijfel

De zes Formule 1-teams met een zetel in de invloedrijke Strategy Group hebben een bom onder het voortbestaan van het orgaan gelegd. Dat bericht brengt Autosport. Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull Racing, McLaren, Williams en Force India zijn samen met afvaardigingen van de internationale autosportbond FIA en commerciële rechtenhouder FOM vertegenwoordigd in de Strategy Group.

De Strategy Group beslist over regelveranderingen en andere ideeën voor de sport. Pas zodra de Strategy Group het licht op groen heeft gezet gaat een voorstel naar de Formule 1 Commissie, waar de overige teams en andere stakeholders, zoals bijvoorbeeld de promotors, in vertegenwoordigd zijn. De teams, FIA en FOM hebben ieder zes stemmen in de Strategy Group.

Onder het bewind van Bernie Ecclestone was het echter zo dat de teams nog een blok konden vormen tegen de FIA. Liberty Media trekt echter meer op met de FIA dan Ecclestone deed, waardoor de positie van de renstallen is verzwakt. De teams vragen zich af hoeveel nut de Strategy Group nog heeft en wat de toegevoegde waarde van het orgaan is. Ze stellen het voortbestaan ter discussie.

Dat schrijven de teams in een brief aan FIA-voorzitter Jean Todt en Formule 1-baas Chase Carey. Daarin snijden ze ook de controverse rondom Marcin Budkowski, de voormalig technisch directeur van de FIA, en de lagere inkomsten aan. Door de uitgaven van Liberty aan extra personeel en initiatieven als F1 Live Londen dreigt de situatie te ontstaan dat de Formule 1 minder geld te verdelen heeft. Dat scheelt de teams tussen de 1 en 2 miljoen pond aan inkomsten.

Het is juist goed dat de teams minder inspraak gaan krijgen in de toekomst, ze worden het onderling toch al zelden eens als puntje bij paaltje komt. Zelfs binnen de Strategy Group is het de groten tegen de kleintjes, één grote politieke slangenkuil. LM en de FIA moeten een soort van denktank oprichten die onafhankelijk gaat bepalen hoe en welke richting de F1 op moet gaan in de toekomst, en dan nog hou ik m'n hart vast.

Denk dat teams en FIA maar eens meer naar de strategy group moeten luisteren. Amerikanen weten als geen ander hoe ze iets moeten vermarkten.
