Mercedes juicht niet te vroeg door 'divagedrag' W08

De auto van Mercedes vertoont het gedrag en de nukken van een diva dit jaar, waardoor de teamleiding zich niet rijker wenst te rekenen dan het is. Door een gunstige samenloop van omstandigheden heeft Lewis Hamilton met vier races te gaan een comfortabele voorsprong van 59 punten op titelconcurrent Sebastian Vettel.

Dat gat is echter zo gedicht als de Mercedes W08 zich ergens in de komende Grands Prix weer van zijn slechtste kant laat zien. Mercedes-motorsportbaas Toto Wolff waakt er dan ook voor om de huid niet te verkopen voordat de beer geschoten is. "Iets is pas zeker wanneer het echt niet meer anders kan, en zover zijn we nog niet", zegt hij in Auto Bild.

"Dit jaar moeten we meer dan ooit knokken voor het kampioenschap en nu is het zaak om er alles aan te doen om dit seizoen succesvol af te ronden. Onze auto is nog steeds een diva. De pech bij Vettel in de voorbije drie races toont bovendien aan hoe snel het kan omslaan. In de racerij gebeuren altijd onvoorspelbare dingen. Er zijn nog honderd punten te verdelen en we kunnen de teugels niet laten vieren."

Mercedes-teampresident Niki Lauda sluit zich daar helemaal bij aan. In gesprek met Auto Motor und Sport betoogt hij: "Op Suzuka hebben we een ongelooflijke stap in de goede richting gezet, maar de titel is nog niet in de tas. Het ziet er op dit moment wel goed en makkelijker voor ons uit, dat geef ik toe. Maar binnen het team speurt iedereen nog naar antwoorden om het gedrag van de auto te verklaren."

  Als Hamilton de pech heeft 2x uit te vallen, wat Vettel gebeurde in de afgelopen 3 races, dan is het weer een heel ander verhaal. Allemaal theoretisch natuurlijk maar het is wel mogelijk.
  Ik begrijp heel goed dat Mercedes die slag om de arm houdt.

  2x uitvallen en dan nog eens een finish met 9 punten verschil ervanuitgaande dat vetten dan telkens 1e wordt. De kans dat Hamilton komende race zijn titel veilig stelt lijkt me aannemelijker !

Natuurlijk rekenen ze bij Mercedes al een beetje op de titel. Ze hebben de knappe koppen en resources om dit niet meer uit handen te geven, maar..... voor het kampioenschap zou het mooi zijn als Lewis de volgende GP zijn motor ploft en de race erna een gridstraf krijgt. Als Vettel die dan allebei wint dan wordt het nog een beetje spannend. Alleen de gunfactor voor Vettel met al zijn gejammer en geklaag en gewijs is gedaald tot 0 Kelvin, dus laat Lewis de titel maar pakken :)
