Ian Ashley viert vandaag zijn 70ste verjaardag

Oud Formule 1-coureur Ian Ashley is vandaag jarig. De in (West-)Duitsland geboren Brit heeft de leeftijd van 70 jaar bereikt. Ashley was in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw actief in de Formule 1. Namens teams als Token, Williams, BRM en Hesketh probeerde hij zich elf maal te kwalificeren voor een Grand Prix, wat hem vier keer lukte. Zijn beste resultaat is een veertiende plaats in Duitsland 1974. De felicitaties gaan uit naar de jarige Ashley.

Komend weekend wordt er geracet in Mexico. In aanloop naar die race werd Salo gevraagd hoe het nu gaat. Hij laat weten meerdere doodsbedreigingen ontvangen te hebben, met name uit Nederland.       Absoluut 1974. Lastiger is de vraag waar? Dus er even goed ingedoken.

      Eerst dacht ik Nurburgring, daar heb je immers een camping pal aan het circuit.
      Maar Lauda startte vanaf pole, Ashley vanaf plek 26, dus is het onwaarschijnlijk dat zij in één blik werden gevangen - bovendien ging Lauda er de eerste ronde af.
      Dus was dit wel Ashley, en niet een andere Brabham coureur, bv Reutemann met nr 7, die bij de start maar een paar posities achter Lauda lag?
      Nadere inspectie leert dat het niet car nr 7 maar nr 42 is. Ashley kwam alleen in Canada en VS met dat nummer aan de start. In beide races wist ie zich niet te kwalificeren dus is de foto sowieso tijdens de trainingen of kwalificatie gemaakt. En als ik uit die twee moet kiezen ga ik voor Watkins Glen.

Toch jammer: tot nu toe konden we de schijn nog een beetje ophouden dat “fans” van autosport net een tikkeltje meer beschaving in zich hadden dan bijvoorbeeld voetbalfans. Maar daar komt nu ook een einde aan, omdat er blijkbaar genoeg gladiolen bestaan die het in hun kop halen om andere mensen de dood toe te wensen, simpel omdat ze een beslissende rol hebben in een sport. Mocht je zo’n eikel zijn en dit lezen: je bent een verspilling van de lucht die je inademt, aldus Salo....

    ik weet het nog goed die fraaie 14e plaats op de Nürburgring in een Token-Ford, dat was de race die Regazzoni won voor Ferrari, die leidde de race van start tot finish, nadat Lauda in de eerste ronde crashte in een poging om Scheckter in te halen.
    Zo gingen die dingen toen.....
