Sauber hoopt snel line-up volgend jaar bekend te maken

Sauber-teambaas Frederic Vasseur wil nog geen mededelingen doen over de line-up van volgend jaar. Er zijn veel geruchten, maar het team houdt de kaken stijf op elkaar, al hoopt het wel snel een antwoord op die vraag te kunnen geven.

Geen Ferrari-B

Het is goed mogelijk dat zowel Pascal Wehrlein en Marcus Ericsson volgend jaar niet meer voor het Zwitserse team zullen rijden. Formule 2-kampioen en Ferrari-talent Charles Leclerc lijkt sowieso in de auto te gaan stappen, maar Vasseur wil daar nog niet aan. "We hebben een contract met Ferrari over de levering van motoren, niet over de levering van coureurs", aldus de Fransman. Eerder zei hij al dat Sauber geen B-team van Ferrari wil worden.

Chassis heeft hogere prioriteit

Maar behalve Leclerc maakt ook een ander talent uit de stal van Ferrari kans op een stoeltje bij het team van Sauber: Antonio Giovinazzi. De Italiaan reed begin dit jaar bij afwezigheid van Pascal Wehrlein al twee Grand Prix voor het team. Maar Sauber zou Ericsson graag willen behouden voor het team. Als Vasseur daarmee geconfronteerd wordt zegt hij lachend: "Volgende vraag!" Maar vervolgt dan met: "We hopen snel een antwoord te hebben op die vraag, maar de coureurs hebben op dit moment niet de hoogste prioriteit. Het is belangrijker dat we een beter chassis bouwen."

Hangt niet af van geld

Ericsson brengt behalve ervaring ook nog eens geld mee naar het team. Maar daar zegt Vasseur over: "Nee, de financiële aspecten spelen hierin geen rol. We hebben een lange termijn visie voor het team en een gezond budget dus ons seizoen hangt niet af van het geld dat een coureur meebrengt."

Leclerc lijkt me een zekerheidje. Ericssons situatie is een beetje vreemd. De financiers van zijn 'carrière' zijn eigenaar van het team, maar teambaas Vasseur ziet het met hem niet meer zitten. Een volledige Ferrari line-up gaat denk ik ook niet gebeuren al zie ik Wehrlein als (ex-?)Mercedes protegé ook niet aanblijven. Ik ben benieuwd!

Ik vind het echt jammer dat teams als Williams en Sauber geen plaaggeesten meer zijn van de jongens vooraan. Wie herinnert zich nog de strijd tussen Schumacher en Montoya. Dat waren eens mooie tijden. Soms zat je echt op het puntje van je stoel. Tegenwoordig is het de vraag met hoeveel marge Lewis wederom pole gaat pakken. Hopelijk komen de teams in de toekomst dichterbij elkaar te liggen. Dit zal spannende races tot gevolg hebben!!

  Volgens mij zit het op dit moment al heel dicht bij elkaar toch? Het kan morgen nog alle kanten op imo.

  Is toch nooit anders geweest, dat de teams onderin, met budgetten die een derde uitmaken van de budgetten van de topteams, enkele sec. langzamer zijn is toch ook logisch, dit is nu eenmaal de charme van de F1.

  Nou....dat is niet helemaal waar. Destijds was Williams in staat om het de jongens vooraan, dus McLaren en Ferrari knap lastig te maken. Later toen Williams wegzakte naam Renault hun plek over. Beide teams beschikten destijds niet over een enorme budget.

Ik hoop op Wehrlein en Leclerc (die laatste is waarschijnlijk wel een zekerheidje). Maar ik ben bang dat we nog langer opgescheept zullen zijn met Ericsson, vanwege de eigenaar en de centen van Longbow....
